Seriously? Use Skype. It works, in my experience, far better across platforms.

Okay..i just found this Forum in searching my problem. I've spend hours yesterday with the same thing. I bought my new Logitech camera for my notebook and used Windows Live to connect with my friends. I had no problem doing that. However, when I went to connect with my daughter - who has a Mac - NOTHING. Their Mac store told them we both had to be on AIM - so I switched to AIM and when I try to connect with them it says "Connection Timed Out" - when they try to connect with me it says "AIM could not detect your camera". I don't know what else to do??? Any help for this non technical grandma!!

Here's what I did to get it to work. YMMV.

On the mac side (Leopard):

Configure your AIM account in iChat to use port 443.
If you're behind a firewall, open ports 16393-16402. If your firewall requires it, add port 5678 as the "Trigger".
Make sure iChatAgent is added to the Mac firewall.

On the PC side (XP/Vista):
Go to the exceptions tab of the firewall control panel-
Make sure AIM, AOL Instant Messenger and AOL Loader are listed and checked.
If UPnP Framework is not checked, then check it.
Select UPnP Framework and click 'Edit'. Make sure TCP 2869 and UDP 1900 are checked. Also, change the scope of both of these entries to 'Any'.

Video and audio conferences should work without a hitch now.

If you're trying to Video Chat on your PC, with your daughter, who owns a Mac, you should both try Skype, as Mastrap suggested to the original poster earlier. I've had no problems at all using my iMac's Webcam to video chat with PC users who use their own webcams. It may save you a lot of hassle.

I use Skype all the time on my Macbook to video chat with Windows Users. It is free and the quality is good.

Another vote for Skype. If you're a non-technical grandma type - OR your daughter is, mucking around with the firewall isn't going to be an option, no matter how detailed the directions are.

Both of you just download and install Skype. It's very straightforward.
