What does everyone on here do for a living?

I'm a college student turned k-8 school district tech guy.

I was going to Illinois State University which is in the middle of a cornfield. I've transfered to the University of Illinois at Chicago. (Better food..mmmm)

But deadlines never work as we want(you have to apply for spring semesters before the fall one has even begun), so now I'm a tech until August. I'd much rather tech manuals than calculus books, but I'll make far more money in the long run with one of them new-fangled university educations.

I do a lot of stuff. Try to maintain our macs..and lots of nasty PC stuff people here wouldn't want to hear about. Novell, system policies..etc.

I'm working on setting up a web server using IIS on windows 2000 server right now. I looked at all the available platforms and for our situation this was the best one. (We already had an extra server box, so the choice was linux, netware or win2k...)

so what do all of you do?

I'm a network consultant. I design, implement, troubleshoot, and maintain enterprise networks. My specialty is in infrastructure and security.

I trained as a musician but realized in my first week of college that there was not really a lot of money to be made in classical music and took my hobby and turned it into my vocation.

First and foremost I'm a college student (English/History Major).

Aside from that, I do a great deal of web design/development both for my college and freelance for a number of non-profits/businesses in the area.

I've also inherited the role of film editor for the campus. I've helped shoot/edit a few commercials, and I'll this summer I'll be putting together some promotional materials for several departments.

I also edit all the graphics and advertisements for the colleges newspaper, but my only reason for doing so at this point is to try to convince the editor-in-chief to transition to the web. Blasted print-media...

Web design is the route I plan to go after college, assuming I can find a job. I'd love to incorporate some of the digital video work, but it'll probably just end up as a hobby.

Systems Admin for a small (for now) Telecommunications company in Tampa, FL.

Admin 8 or 10 Linux boxen, sweep, do the odd Customer Service bit here and there, and just basically ensure that everything is running smoothly..

When I think about the people who suffer through 4 years of college for this, I want to cry. I, like a lot of folks in this business, just decided to turn my hobby into cash. I'd be doing the same thing at home with my spare time, so why not just play all the time?

Second year chemical engineering student at the U of S. This year I developed a tan that includes a permanent spreadsheet grid on my face. Thank you Radiation King monitors and thermodynamic labs...

In two weeks, I start a summer job as research engineer with an oil company working in the advanced control systems department. I have no idea what this job entails. I figure it's somewhere between fetching coffee and programming the Churchill equation for bulk velocity into pressure switches with assembly code. I'm hoping somewhere closer to former.

film & tv crew: gaffer / staging / AD / runner; whatever they'll pay me for.

am getting real sick of it though - relentless 16 hour days (when you can get work), unstable & sh(t-head actors, political, bitchy production offices, f@#*%en useless directors, suck ass egomaniacal producer hitlers, no sleep for months on end, lots of street cred though.

if you're young, single, free, love money, travel, hotels, top-shelf drugs, working hard and long in exotic locations, partying and being too good for hollywood megastars, then this is the job for you.

seriously though: there are not many hollywood stars who would dare piss off a crew member - they know better than that.

odd, but film crew are the only people they respect (by necessity).

high school freshmen. I mow 3 yards during the summer so that I can buy a new mac every couple of years or so. I am thinking about getting maybe a G4 450 DP this year. Last year I bought a Ruby DV (one of my worst investments, which I found out 2 weeks after I bought the thing.) and the year before that, I bought a 7100 from ISU.

I'm a stock researcher/senior writer for an investment group that owns a group of investment-related sites. My writing gets read by at least 15,000 paying subscribers (not including the audience that gets it for free from their friends who paid for it, my guesstimate is that about 50,000 people end up reading it). I work about 20 hours a week from home but get paid more than my brother who works for one of the big brokerage houses, has to work 9-5, wears a suit and has to deal with sucky co-workers. I'm very happy with this arrangement, especially since I get paid in US dollars which spend very nicely here in Canada.

I teach business finance (financial economics) and commercial bank management/investments. Plus, I do as much finance or financial software/applications consulting as I can on the side.

In my life before grad school, I was a professional musician for about 15 years (part-time), frame carpenter, finish carpenter, auto machinist, auto mechanic, plumber's assistant and mortician's assistant. Plus, I had a job washing windows and sweeping up when I was 12. Oh, and I was a commercial real estate analyst for about 6 years in there, based on my construction & finance experience. And I ran a networking VAR for a couple years in the early 90s.

AND I hope D-Day is this summer for me, too. I spend too much time with my classroom duties to make much progress on my dissertation during the year. I hope to finish before I leave to take a position in August.

I'm a college student at Wesleyan University in Conn. I'm doing a special major (only special because no other school has a major with the same name) called College of Social Studies, which covers govt, history, economics, and philosophy. It is based on the Oxford system - small classes, tutor, one paper a week. Our only grade in the major depends on 8 papers written in 4 days. That's coming up soon, so I'm stressed (MacNN is my break from work when no one else is around.) Anyway, I love it. I guess I'll do something in business after school, but I hope to go back to school for a grad degree.

I got offered a job like that while still in University, as I know my Pro Tools, Logic, MIDI, etc. inside-out. While the pay is pretty good, the hours are horrific and the company/superiors/clients usually treat you like sh!t. But if you're just in it for the money it's pretty good.

Fine place. I did time there in 1969. Imagine it's even better now. One of my brothers went to IIT nearby and the other to U of Chicago. Then we all went West along seperate paths.

IIT hit some hard times. They think they are pulling out if it but I'm not sure.

Let's see, first of all I'm 2nd year college. Last year I taught graphics and 3D/2D animation at one of the high schools (Arlington High) around here. Photshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Quark, Lightwave, how to use a camera, shoot a claymation, make a pencil test, etc.

Now I work for a Pool company in Palm Springs designing swimming pools and spas, and doing construction plans do the guys know how to dig the thing. (All on macs of course.)

I am lucky enough to have the best job I've ever had. I am officially known at the Senor Mac Tech at MIT LL. That pretty much covers everything. If it's got an Apple on it, It's in my juridiction. If it runs on a Mac, it's my responsibility. I. LOVE. This. Job. I cannot believe they pay me for what I do. The institution is amazingly cool as well.

I used to teach Lit at a small private school. Then I taught lit and was the MIS at said school. All Mac. Before that, I acted for a living. Loved that, hated New York. Left. Miss acting, not New York.

I'm a cognitive science (AI, human/computer interaction, robotics) student at U.C. Berkeley. Its my 3rd year.

I have a full time job currently as a Sysadmin at statewide database (they mess with massive amounts of data for the CA state government). I get to play with linux boxen. And do some tech support. Build new linux boxen. wheee. Its quite boring. I'll be going to part time again soon (whew) when my school semester starts.

I will say a few good things for NYC: first, you can get anything you want any time of the day or night. Second, the performing arts scene is outstanding. Third, not ALL New Yorkers are putzes. I know quite a few nice ones. Osiris is a good guy and he's there. It's the complete strangers who suck. If you are not within their realm of friend/ relative/ aquaintence, you are of no consequence. Forth, MWNY (which is still a bone of contention since they took it from Boston). Lastly, Thomson Ave Pizza. Second best pizza on the planet. I will admit that the best view of NYC is the one in my rearview mirror. I suppose you can either handle it or you can't. I could not. I will not say it was wasted time, though. Learned a lot, did a lot. Glad I left, though.

I'm a 10th grader, who hustles people out of their well-earned money by pretending I can do web design.

Let me ask one question, to maxelson - which private school?

I've lived in New York all my life. It is a wonderful, wonderful place. Anyone who listens to the stereotypical description and has never been here has no right to insult us. I've actually found that most people are extremely nice in the City. As for the high real estate prices, it's otherwise known as the Right To Live In The Capitol Of The World Tax.

I

St. Andrew's School in Barrington, RI, and, more recently (and briefly), Kents Hill School in Kents Hill, ME. The ME job lasted seven months. I was the Dir. of Technology and, to be honest, I burned myself out. Worked 16 hour days 7 days a week. And worked in a dorm. No escape. Good school, I was just working myself to death.

From all the things I've heard about New York (and my experience in dealing wiht New Yorkers), definitely not my scene. I was very dismayed to find out that a lot of the things that I dislike about Toronto are the very things that describe New York. As far as the things you mentioned, I think Chicago is the place to go for great energy, culture, coffeebars, movie theaters, clubs, ethnic food, parks, beautiful women...

But for beautiful women, Alaska, Texas and Florida are the States with the best-looking women I have ever seen. I've never been to SoCal but I've seen some major lookers from there too along with Hawaii.

For all that and more, can't beat Boston. My personal favorite city. Next London, next Providence.

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

Hey Scott_H, by D-Day do you mean dissertation (or defense)? In what field?

I teach cognitive psychology and statistics at a small state university in the west, and I go up for tenure next year . I got a PhD in Psychology in 1996 from Indiana University.

Lately, I've been teaching online courses for extra pay - Industrial Psychology and Intro Psychology. Started coming here during breaks from "teaching" online this semester. Been having trouble with OSX browsers and eCollege - our online course provider - but still sticking it out.

I had taken the basic programming sequence in college (Pascal on VMS!), so I ended up writing our psychology experiments in grad school - HyperCard, and Visual Basic on Windows. Pretty simple stuff, flashing pictures and words on the screen, recording response times. Been using RealBasic for about a year now.

I'm a student majoring in philosophy and sociology.

I'm also a soon to be Editor-in-Chief for a student publication, so I guess I'm also in the publishing business.

I've also dabbled very slightly in videography. I'm waiting to see how things turn to see if I can prosper in that field. I'm thinking it will just be a hobby.

Web and Print Graphic Designer with an occasional Flash project thrown in. Been doing this for about 4 companies for over 6 years. I like where I'm at now. I work with good people and the projects can be fun. I get to do a little cartooning now and then.

I've had many a job...dish washer, t-shirt vendor, comic book artist, furniture builder (IKEA), sales person, landscaper, freelancer and the worse of all...cashier at a CVS in a suburban mall. If I had not gotten outta there I definately would have gone postal...serving people sucks.
