I had pretty much given up on checking the status of my order, but just now did it. It shipped yesterday, and the FedEx tracking number is valid and FedEx's site confirms that they got it from Apple in Sacramento yesterday. It's a 1.8GHz and I did NOT buy it through the education channel. It looks like Apple will beat the estimated arrival date that they gave me (29th).
EDIT - I've been a little busy... My G5 arrived and pictures will be in a post below. I haven't even plugged it in yet, and likely won't be able to until tomorrow. It's just going to sit on my desk making my roommates jealous until then.

Any idea what your arrival date is? I ordered the 1.6 G5 model and my estimated shipping date is still on or before 8/29.. I hope it ships real soon.

Hey, now that is good news for a change. Apple finally shipped an order to an individual (you did order as an individual right, not through an institution/school?)

Good news??? Thats AWESOME news!
That means that Apple still looks good in my eyes. This is my first Mac, and with a ship date of 9/9/03, I thought it would be on time for sure. Recently, some people had me worried. I'm really glad someone finally got a ship date!
Thanks!

It'd be *so* nice of Apple if they beat that "on or before 8/29" date that many of us have. It'd be sweet to play with the new machine over the long weekend. Mmm, G5....

It is a completely stock 1.8 G5. I called up the Apple store via their 800 number and placed the order the night of June 23.

I just ordered a Dual 2.0 yesterday (I was trying to hold out a little while, but finally broke down).
My order says on or before 10/16, but now I hear Apple is shipping Edu orders first. I hope that's true, actually, since I'm faculty at a University and my machine was ordered through the Apple Store (online) for Education.
So, there's at least some chance I'll see a G5 before mid-October

Wow, I ordered my Dualie on August 7th, through the Apple Store for Education, and it says on or before 10/20. I can only hope that means they are ahead of schedule.

That's insane man. I ordered a dual 2.0 in the middle of July and they gave me a date of October 9th, you order yesterday and get the 16th...
I hope that means I'll be seeing mine sooner than later.
Mine was an education order via the 1-800 my apple...
only time will tell I guess.

I ordered my Dualie on 6/24 with a ship date of 8/29. I checked my Apple loan account today and noticed that they have pre-charged the amount. Hopefully this means it will ship Thursday or Friday!

My expected shipping date just seemd to be automatically calculated.
I ordered on Jul 21st, and as the est. shipping was 7 - 10weeks at theat time, my 'on or before' date is exactly 10 weeks from the day i ordered.... heres hoping its closer to the 7 weeks tho - meaning ill get it around the 8th of September, and before i go back to Uni... dont really want to make another trip to get my G5...

My sister ordered a 1.8 gig G5 tower from MacMall last Friday.
They said expect delivery sometime in mid September.

Since your machine was shipped Fed-Ex, you must have it by now! Any first impressions?

Wiz - It hasn't come yet! Maybe when I get home from work today it will be waiting for me. That would be nice.
I did get initial reactions at the Apple Store in downtown Chicago yesterday. Didn't get a chance to use it, but I have to say that the workmanship on the case is top-notch. I've never seen a computer case look this good. Additionally, the case is huge! It's going to tower over my G4 until I get everything transferred over and the new computer gets set up and the old on put on eBay.

Not just the case. Anyone else notice the chipset is layed out in a symetrical fassion AND they used gold leads? Talk about design to the bone!

I also envy you.
Question... was the black box the shipping container... or was it nested inside of a more discreet box?
Enquiring minds want to know!

Yes, the black box is the shipping box. It is nestled inside some heavy duty styrofoam and is wrapped in a bag.
I wish I could ignore my work for the rest of the day and go home to play

Good move, Apple.
I wonder how long that box would last on my front stoop. You see, I live about 2 blocks away from the local Junior College...
