i've been thinking about it, but...
none of is is essential for me, right now,
and don't want to give up itunes integration.
but some great ideas...

The fact that it has gapless playback has me strongly leaning toward trying it. Lack of iTunes integration on the other hand ... :/

that's sort-of it for me too...
i really like the simple integration of itunes & the ipod.
but gapless playback, cross-fading...
and my GF has a problem in one ear, we keep telling apple to add balance to the ipods!
i am gonna keep an eye on rockbox, tho...

You can dual boot RockBox and Apple's firmware, so you should be able to sync with iTunes and use RockBox for playback.

Hopefully, it will run on my 10GB iPod (2G).

Yes, thats true also for many elder people.
My father would like to use my iPod from time to time (he is 78). But without balance he can only hear one channel.
Our solution is an external balance regulator. Sennheiser sells one. But it is intended to be used for tv and comes with 15 feet of cable .

hopefully, apple will get on this.
balance, gapless playback, cross-fading.
how about :
shuffle set by playlist?
maybe even above ideas by playlist? (ie would be great to have "normal" play for an album, but crossfading for a mixed-artist playlist...
and so on & so on...
