This is probably a silly question, but I can't figure this out.

In save panels (such as the download location preference in the Internet control panel), how do I choose the Desktop?

I can obviously navigate to the Desktop but I can't figure out how to highlight it and get the panel to choose it.

As far as the Internet control panel goes, select Desktop in the pop-up. You'll notice that one of your drives will be selected. Shift-click it in the list below to deselect. That should do it.
