Did you purchase the insurance available for iPhone 4? It covers damage, theft, loss, out of warranty failure. Downside it cost $11.99 a month.

Apple care is a one time fee of $69 and can be purchased anytime during the 1st year but does not cover breakage, spills, damage, theft and loss.

A few thoughts:
  1. These plans are provided because on average they are profitable
  2. If you have the plan and have a problem they cover, you'll be quite happy
  3. If you don't have a problem, you've wasted $288 over 2 years (probably plus tax) if you want to cover breakage, and I think then there's a deductible of $199.
  4. In the past, I think iPhone out of warranty repairs, like screen replacement are around $200. Perhaps iPhone 4 issues are going to be more expensive.
  5. When you get about 18 months out, typically you're upgrade eligible, and in the case your phone dies, you can upgrade to the latest model

With all of this in mind, it doesn't seem like a great deal to me even without the deductible unless you're unable to save a bit in case you need it for a repair.

True but I already dropped my iphone once. It is bound to happen again. There is a $50 deductible when claiming on an accidentally damaged item

Not for me.

Insurance for consumer electronics doesn't make sense, unless you have a habit of being negligent or abusive with your devices.

If you can totally destroy an iPhone 4 through and through and have it replaced for $50 plus the monthly fee, it's probably a decent gamble. I put a bumper on mine, and hopefully that will be all I have to pay. If I'm unlucky, I know I could have a couple hundred + expense.

I would recommend getting a personal articles policy. It is an all peril policy and much cheaper than specialty insurance like Safeco. I have a MBP, MB, and Canon DSLR covered for about $45 a year and there is no deductible.

Rumor, what type of protection does that offer? Breakage and theft/loss?

Nah. I'm careful enough that I don't worry about dropping it, etc. If something goes wrong with it, I'll take my chances with Apple.

$12 a month sounds like a lot to me, $5 would be more palatable.

I got AppleCare for my iPhone 4 mainly b/c it's a 1st generation design and bound to have some bugs in the hardware. But insurance? Nah, I have better things to do with $300. I'm typically very careful of my electronics and haven't felt the need.

I am, however, loath to give my 3G to my wife. I've seen what she can do to a blackberry.

I think I heard that Apple will replace an iPhone for $200 regardless of what you did to it. Now obviously if it gets stolen your are screwed, but for anything else, it seems to make an insurance policy pretty worthless.

I'm of the opinion that 99 times out of 100 extended warranties and/or extra insurance is not worth it.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Insure it yourself. Set $700 or $1000 of your savings aside as "refundable iP4 insurance". Keep checking the replacement cost in Craigslist and you can move a few $$$ off that account accordingly. When iP5 comes around, use such money plus the sale money of the iP4 to buy the new Jesus phone.

Whatever you do, do NOT add it as a rider on your homeowners policy.

I did that for a MBP of mine. When it was stolen I made a claim. After deductible they paid me about 50% (or less) of what my MBP was worth. Then, my rates were raise for (so they tell me) 38 months. The cost will be what I could have purchased 3 Macbook Pro's for. I would have been better off eating the loss.

I got robbed twice. The second time by the homeowners policy company. :-)
