Contrary to earlier media reports that suggested Home Depot would drop the mobile payments service, in fact the company has announced that it formally plans to support Apple Pay throughout its entire US operation, making it the largest retailer thus far to support Apple's mobile-payments platform. The announcement comes alongside, and will not replace, stores' acceptance of payment rival PayPal, and the chain says it may continue to add other payment forms.

Because Home Depot stores across the US were in the process of upgrading to NFC-supporting terminals, many of the company's 2,000-strong outlets were already able to accept mobile payment options from companies other than its official partner PayPal, such as Google Wallet or the former Softcard (now owned by Google). Some customers had recently reported being unable to process payments using Apple Pay recently, but this is now seen as part of the process to upgrade the terminals rather than a dropping of the service.

Home Depot is the world's largest home-improvement chain, and sees mobile payments -- from Apple as well as rivals -- as a way to please customers and speed up checkout processes. A spokesman for the retailer said that the firm would also be looking at and perhaps adding officially other forms of mobile payment.

The chain will join with a number of national brands, such as Panera Bread and Whole Foods Market, in officially supporting Apple Pay, leaving non-NFC-supporting merchants such as those who plan on using CurrentC when it finally arrives (such as Wal-Mart and Target) increasingly isolated. At least one CurrentC member, Meijer's grocery chain, has bucked the no-NFC-support rule and opted to support Apple Pay and other payment systems based on customer demand.

Great news, I know a lot of people were upset earlier today when it seemed like they had dropped it.

They'll be on the right side of history.

We were pretty sure when the story broke yesterday morning about it not working at Home Depot that it wasn't an abandonment of the platform, considering that they had never officially announced support.

So, we waited, and we're glad we did.

Agree, but then again, smarter companies have made dumber moves than this, so you never know sometimes.
