MacKeeper DB left exposed

I think I'm more shocked that 13 million people have actually paid for that snakeoil.

I see this pile of excrement on at least 3 computers every week. It's a constant battle.

"Yes I know it says it has identified 8,432 threats on you computer. But really. It hasn't "

Comes back a few months later

Re-downloaded it did you?

Repeat endlessly.

I've discovered this on people's machines too, it should be taken off the market.

I think my dad installed it on his laptop.

Do most people enable installing apps from unknown developers?

I once cleaned 4 copies off my dad's iMac. He'd installed it 4 times. Agh. But I think he's learned his lesson since then, and hopefully his data wasn't in the hack.

It didn't start that way. The early software versions were fairly decent at what they did. But, user data collection was always pretty shady, with code practices following suit a bit later.

McAfee is just as bad. It's essentially ransomware now, it breaks (frequently) and then you're required to buy an update to make your computer work properly again. It's banned from the office, but somehow it always manages to reappear.
