That makes sense. I don't particularly like the old dashboards either - feel a bit gimmicky to me. The 2016 is the new redesign and is super nice I must say. I'm generally a Japanese car guy - but almost all of the compact class is pretty stellar nowadays.

I guess she's gotten over the parking hump, and has bumped her budget up to $15K.
She has her eyes set on an A3, but that seems just a touch out of range. I peg that as a car for a $20K budget. Personally, I don't like them, because my knee rubs against the center column.
I've got more dog transport happening, so this Tuesday I've got a Mazda3 all day.
Audi. Solid cars, though I'd put their reliability below BMW (mostly for small things, I've noticed, but those add up and can become a PITA). $15k definitely puts her into a nice Mazdaspeed3, which is a very fun little hot hatch. Used Mazda MAZDASPEED3 For Sale Chicago, IL - CarGurus

Stay away from the MazdaSpeed. For a generic "I'd like a sporty car" person, it's a terrible choice. Harsh suspension, low ground clearance, and absolutely garbage gas mileage. They're only available with a six speed manual, and the clutch is heavy. It's a car for enthusiasts that know what they're getting into, not a normal person who thinks they want a sporty car.
$15k would get you into a higher mileage second generation (2010-2013) model at best, which is totally out of warranty. No way I'd recommend a non-car person buy a turbocharged, "highly-tuned", sporty car that far out of warranty. You're asking for trouble.
The regular 3 would be fine there, and 15k would get you decently equipped and low milage, though the interiors look and feel cheap (if you're picky about that sort of thing).
I know you hate data, and I profusely apologize for bringing it up in a conversation about...data.
I wasn't about data, but thanks?

Mechanically they've been fine for me, it's all the peripheral systems and electronic gizmos that crapped out (I'm pretty sure that's what I said... yep, it is).

Schizophrenia is commonly mistaken for multiple personality disorder, it is in no way a related condition.
Secondly, there are many studies that conclude the exact opposite of the one you posted, that THC inducing schizophrenia in people is bunk and an old wives tale.
Or, she could just do what I did.........buy a 12-year-old Honda Civic for a few thousand bucks and drive it into the ground. Of course, like I said it only made sense because I was willing to put some elbow grease into maintenance and stumbling around trying to do my own work.
Anyway, my personal anecdotal non-data opinion is to stick to a Honda or Subaru. I love both of mine, haha.

"Feeling like you have multiple personality disorder today?" doesn't have the same ring to it.

The pro-pot lobby wants everyone to believe it can cure anything and the anti-pot groups, including the feds, want us to believe the opposite. It's mostly propaganda on both sides.

The constant mis-representation of the illness doesn't do those who suffer from it any good. I have an uncle with paranoid schizophrenia, and another Uncle had it but he passed away several years ago. Once he (passed away uncle) brought his car in for routine service and eventually was pressured into buying a new car due to his extreme paranoia and anxiety. Luckily my grandfather (WWII Vet) stormed into the dealership and made those opportunistic ****s reverse the deal.

As with most things that devolve into extremes the truth lies comfortably somewhere in the middle.
We ordered a pair of Tesla Model 3s for the office, to replace the company cars (a Infiniti G37 sedan and a much-reviled Honda Odyssey). Easy decision at @$29k each. Wow, Tesla's going to sell a lot of them, aren't they?

I don't believe it'll be quite like the Model S for resale value, which haven't depreciated much at all, because there'll be so many more of them.
Now I'll 3 of their 4 models (no interest in an X).

This was what I was talking about earlier. They're out there and you can find them if you're patient.
2001 BMW 330Ci conv, 5-spd, M sport pack, 75k miles: $7000 (he took $6500 cash)
Pluses:
everything works (for real)
straight body w/o dents, 8/10 paint (garage kept)
interior is clean w/o tears, 7/10
service is up to date w/ all records, no fluid leaks, clean Carfax
75% tread on Michelin Pilot SS tires, and a recent alignment (no strange wear)
drives and sounds the business
Flags:
aftermarket Koni coilover shocks, anti-roll bars and braces (driven by boyracer?)
K&N cold air intake (yeah, boyracer, though OEM is included)
exhaust noise valve is jammed open with a golf tee (heh)
has the original top (though it doesn't leak and looks okay)
numerous interior bits and bobs upgraded with M3 parts, including shifter and steering wheel
Overall though, it's a very nice car for the $ and at least he didn't dink with the engine.

Why the hate for the Odyssey? It's by far the best-driving minivan I've ever driven, and I've done a lot of ski trips so I've tried almost all of them. If I was driving enough people to warrant a minivan, it's the one I'd pick.
I'm out on the Model 3, although I was initially interested. Unless it's a second driver or daily commuter, the range really isn't good enough IMO, at least for here in Canada. About 3 hours of driving, and likely a lot less than that in winter temperatures? I like my road trips far too much to have such a limitation.

For a non-enthusiast on a budget's only car? Stay the **** away from that.
Why would a non-car enthusiast buy it in the first place? Anyway, what you do is buy the car and put back $3500, as if you actually paid $10000. You'd be hard pressed to find anything else that nice, that drives that well, for $10k.

They hate the thing, to the point they won't use it. So might as well ditch it and get something else. At most they do ~150mi /day, so the range is fine (they'll have an ER version too, for a little more, that will raise it up to 260).

I mean, if I didn't really need to drive a minivan, I wouldn't. And I don't.
If I needed to comfortably haul family or office friends on a daily basis, and/or take regular road trips with lots of gear, I'd be all over the Odyssey. It's as sexy as a minivan can get at this point, it drives like much less of a boat than other minivans, and it's super comfortable. We borrowed one for a 11-hour ski trip to Quebec this winter - 4 people and ski gear for all 8 of us, and it was fantastic.

You're the one making the recommendation in a thread asking for recommendations for a car for a non-car enthusiast.

And after two years when that $3500 has disappeared due to maintenance and repairs, what then?
Fifty-seven percent of US households have two or more cars. The average commuter does 25 miles per day averaging 25 miles per hour.
Those two+ vehicle households could VERY EASILY replace one car with a Tesla, or heck, even a Leaf. For those once a month road trips, take the regular car.

Sure. Charging is the bigger problem. Not every household with two cars has a garage or dedicated car port.

Wants a GTI, shops manuals, she IS a car enthusiast. You're already hitting it that early in the day? Good for you.
