Canadians have to wait another month for Apple’s iPad to make it across the border. Apple has pushed back the release date from a promised late April to late May.

Pricing will be announced May 10 when Apple will start taking pre-orders online for the iPad for its international release.

The news comes as Rogers announced it will start offering Apple’s iPad wireless data plans at the end of May. While the announcement makes Rogers the first Canadian carrier to announce its iPad plans, it offers no details on what the plans will cost.

Apple explained the delay in the international launch saying demand for the iPad was much higher than the company anticipated.

“Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during the first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch and iPad. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April,” Apple’s Canadian spokesman Simon Atkins said in a release.

“Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of the iPad by one month, until the end of May.”

The iPad comes in both WiFi only and 3G versions, with the lowest priced WiFi starting at $499 US.

Canadians who didn't want to wait for the release of the iPad in Canada have already made the trip across the border to buy one or ordered them to be shipped to friends or relatives in the US and forwarded here.

With the ease most Canadians have in getting to the US, it does seem odd that Apple just doesn't treat North America as one big market and ship simultaneously.

Not "most". Nearest border from here is 5 hrs away to Sault, Michigan. I'd hate to drive all the way there for nothing, for lack of iPads anywhere.

I need an American friend whom I can trust!!

NatGeo estimates that 75% of canadians live within 100 miles of the US border. So that does qualify as "most" for me.

Sorry it's so far for you to drive.
