He passed away June 22, 2015. I remember seeing unconfirmed reports about it, but it dropped out of the news cycle pretty fast. It's truly sad and tragic, and his talent will be missed.
I personally credit his music with getting me interested in movie scores. I distinctly remember being in awe as a child while hearing the music in 'The Land Before Time', then in my early teens when hearing the music in 'Balto' & 'Braveheart', and then to the soundtrack of 'A Beautiful Mind' while struggling as a junior in university.
