Hi guys,

I was thinking of purchasing Windows Office Student Edition, but it's kind of pricy for me at $199 CDN. I know it comes with 3 installs total... will I be able to split the installs with 2 friends or can it only be installed on one systen at a time... Otherwise can you guys advise me to get it somewhere else for cheaper?

I can get iWork '06 for about a quarter of the price from my school but I would much prefer the other. I'm a very heavy Excel user.

Thanks.

The included license says the computers it is installed on must be from the same household, and I believe it goes as far as saying that if you live on campus that you need to take it off of your computer at home. It is really 3 different product keys and 1 disc, and I don't think they would ever notice, but it is a violation of the license.

Just curious: why are you thinking of buying the Windows version of Office?

Like was stated above, its a violation of the software license agreement to "share" it. So if you're going to, don't tell us.

And do be aware that MS Office will check the local network for copies running with the same serial number. If it finds one already running, it won't launch.

Wow, that's cruel, Hah.

Couldn't one just run a firewall (hardware or software) or just disconnect the network connection while launching?

The best way to get Microsoft office is really just to pony up and buy it if you really need it at home... or you can try a free package like OpenOffice.

You did buy the student/teacher version didn't you?

Anyway, if that is the version that you purchased, it IS the student discounted version. Also, "sharing" as you indicated is stealing. Few here like Microsoft, but stealing software is stealing software and it's not tolerated on this forum.

I'm not a mod, just a friendly warning.

Not sure how it works up north (Canada)... but here in the states... you can pick-up Office 2004 for Mac in the University bookstores (large universities anyway) for between $5 and $10 for the Standard Edition, and between $5 and $20 for the PRO edition (No reason to spend more for the PRO edition if you have an intel Mac, as "Virtual PC" does not work on them)... with a Student ID of course...

I know the OP already bought what they needed, but I just thought this might be helpful to someone.

It saved me $200 when I found out.

Depending on what the Campus Level Agreement says, the cost for Microsoft software on campus can be as little as $5 per disc... Which means some pretty awesome deals for students! And it's a MUCH better deal than the "student version."
