Wednesday News

Elite 360 Dropping In Price, RIP Pro Model - Xbox 360 - Kotaku
ou'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumour - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate.

The Wii Will Soon Play DLC Straight Off A 32GB SD Card (Who Needs A HDD?) - Nintendo - Kotaku
Who needs a HDD? Not Wii owners, that's for sure, with news today that - beginning with Guitar Hero 5 - Nintendo will begin allowing proper, retail games (not just VC) to stream data from a high capacity memory card.

Great article.

Sony is the one that used to talk about how making so much money on software sales made up for meager hardware returns, and in this generation they've completely forgotten about how this works.

I might still be itching for a 360, but I'm very, very happy with the value my PS3 has provided. The wife and I love renting Blu-ray movies from Netflix, I've installed a 500 GB hard drive for under $100, put tons of movies and music on it, and have enjoyed some really fantastic games (I still say LittleBigPlanet isn't getting the broad, mainstream recognition it deserves).

Maybe this whole PS3 Slim/price drop thing will spur the market to finally start accepting the PS3. As good as the PS2 was, I just don't get how they've fallen so far in so little time.

Well, the news wasn't actually fully announced yet. Here's a link to the live coverage of the event if you're the sort to get excited about the Playstation.

Ooh, last year's PSP is getting new colors!

Why is that even worth an announcement? At least when Apple adds colors, it comes with a new generation of the hardware.

I figured they were gonna push the PSP Go and not touch the original PSP anymore. Guess they're not 100% convinced of complete digital delivery just yet.

So now the current gen 80 GB PS3 is going to be $300, but if you just wait two weeks you can get a slim with a 120 GB drive for the same price? I don't get it. What's the incentive to buy a PS3 in the next two weeks? Or do we expect that retailers will set their own clearance prices?

Looks like I'm getting a PS3.

If I were at Sony, I would have been scrambling to find a good "One more thing…" Reducing the 80 GB to $200 would have been a freakin' coup. Microsoft would have shat bricks.

Yes, it is. Piano gloss black looked much better, and the new buttons are cheaper.

I mean, I know the console itself is cheaper, but I would have thought production costs would be down...

Lets face it, the glossy plastic finish was to help justify the exorbitant cost through asthetics, not because they gave that much of a ****.

I was really hoping they would improve upon the PS3 design with the slim. I think they made it worse. I didn't know that was possible. Next the original xbox, the PS3 is one of the ugliest consoles ever made.

Weird, I think the ginormous PS3 looks great. I like it way better than the XBox 360 (though to be fair I haven't seen the black version of the latter in person) and about the same as the Wii.

(I can't even really visualize that many other consoles, though I'd imagine many uglier ones have existed)

The new PS3 looks cheap, but it kind of reminds me of the old Nintendo systems and gives me retro warm fuzzies.

You guys think it looks worse?

Okie doke.

So, now let's recap...

PS3 Slim:
Blu-ray drive
120 GB hard drive
Free wireless
Free PSN Account with purchase of console
Dual Shock 3 is rechargeable (with cable) out of the box
Smaller, lighter than former (beastly) PS3
Exclusives such as LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Infamous, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, and more...

I'm not sure about ever catching up to the 360, but I expect a pretty huge push for the PS3 in the last few months of the year.

I think they're talking about the physical appearance. Blu-Ray and disk space don't have any bearing on aesthetics.

No, I know. My okie doke summed up my feelings its aesthetics. The stats just summed up its potential overall appeal.

Picky? What other console was that close to being a perfect square*? It looks like an old laptop from above.

*The GameCube doesn't count because it diffused the situation by being a cube.

The NES was about as close to square. I can't find any shots of it from the same angle to prove it, but I'm pretty sure.
