I ordered a Mini, then read about all the DVI monitor issues..some work, some don't, and the task of finding one that I can afford AND that works is brutal.

can anyone shed light on this? lots of threads at apple discussions under Mini>Displays, so it can't be a fluke, but on the other hand, why would Apple make a computer so incompatible with monitors available?

I am NOT going to be buying an expensive apple monitor, but need a decent DVI monitor for this mini..17" is fine.

Any thoughts?

Hello-
I've got a mini that I use at work with an analog HP LCD and it works fine. I think the problems for the most part have been with analog CRT monitors. DVI monitors should work just fine for you. Hope this helps!

XLR8YourMac (awesome site) has put together some reports on dim video on the Mac mini. My suggestion is find a display you can afford and see if there's been any reported problems with it:

OK..thank you for the responses about dim video in VGA monitors. I am a bit concerned about issues reported with DVI monitors; there's a link of various models and whether they do/do not work with the mini. As I've never seen this kind of thread for any other Mac I've bought, I sat up and took notice.

This thread contains the link to the "tally" of monitors which do and don't work, plus comments about various Mac Mini/DVI monitor issues:

That list that you've linked is filled with errors. There are multiple monitors listed there that are not even DVI-capable. Also, some are likely reporting that adjustment buttons don't work. I have a Dell monitor (DVI) paired with my mini and it looks excellent.
