With thin and light laptops probably coming from Apple and the iPhone the same thing can be accomplished. Perhaps someday the iPhone will also sync over Bluetooth or Wifi.

Overdue.

WTF were they thinking in the first place ?

I give Palm two more years before going broke or being bought.

Well, c'mon. Let's give them some credit for dropping this flop-to-be and concentrating their efforts on hopefully more important projects.

The promised that in 2002 and we are still waiting.

The problem I have is the Foleo should never have come to market. The fact that they had to kill it before it even was alive says volumes about the company.

It wasn't a horrible idea, but IMHO, the term Palm now is synonymous with a 90's boom and 00's failure.

Seeing as this was touted as a revolutionary new product that was going to turn Palm around (before it was unveiled), I really don't see them as having any other "important projects" in the pipeline.

The sad fact is that Palm has rendered itself irrelevant and the Foleo was a desperate attempt at creating a new niche they could survive in. Sadly, that niche it turned out - did not exist.

Where they go now is unknown, but I doubt they will turn around and surprise us with something brilliant after this fiasco.

Even worse, their "new" mobile platform is supposed to be used in the Foleo II. *sigh*

This is how I remember things...

Palm success was because its ex apple people stole what was best about the Apple newton and improved on it in size and price with the Palm Pilot.

Then all the good people from Palm company leave and make Handspring.

Handspring makes the even cheaper version of the Palm Pilot.

Palm continues making handhelds with very little innovation for years.

Handspring creates the clunky but functional hybrid palm/smartphone.

Palm knows handhelds are in trouble so it buys back handspring to save its ass with the treo.

Palm know owns the treo but innovation comes to a standstill again.

Palm knows its next gen OS is DOA so it comes out with a treo running Windows CE its main competitor. People don't love it.

Apple comes out and ****s up the whole phone/smartphone market with the first true convergence device.

Palm announces Foleo. Realizes nobody wants it and they better concentrate on fighting the iPhone.

What's next.... Palm gets bought out by some chinese company or Microsoft.

Even M$ wouldn't buy a company that doomed.

Well, there is still hope that they would
Together, they would be a real, uhm, winning combination

The rumors have been flying lately about MS buying RIM (Blackberry maker)... maybe they'll buy Palm for a song instead.

I know.

And I'd be more scared about M$ + RIM than M$ + Palm. The latter would be the worst of all worlds.

What I'm saying is that perhaps Palm has finally realized they were headed in the wrong direction and are going to try to correct their course. If the Folio had come out, there would be Palm bashing (not without reason).

But now that the Folio has been canceled with a public admission by Palm that it just wasn't right, instead of celebrating Palm for this move, the Palm bashing continues nonetheless. What exactly do you want from Palm at this point?

If they don't come out with something relatively good within the next year, they will suffer for it, and competition will take care of Palm's fate anyhow. But I say we give them a chance for now, considering they actually seemed to pay attention to the users this time.

Don't get me wrong, though, I am thoroughly disappointed in Palm, and at this point I merely watch them from the distance with mild interest. I'm really hoping that the "iPod Touch" is the PDA I've been looking for all these years since the Newton was killed. Some things have held promise, but nothing has really delivered in my eyes since then as far as PDAs are concerned, to the point that I've given up PDAs until someone comes along and delivers, and that somebody, I've always thought, is probably Apple itself.

But it's still sad. Sad that they failed so badly and sad that they've practically given away market share to Microsoft, whose empire I do not wish to see increased. They even went as far as implementing WinCE into one of their products. So, I do have a mild interest in Palm pulling itself back up and actually being competitive. I think healthier competitors means a healthier marketplace with lots of choices for consumers.

My wife still owns a bunch of Palm shares. She lost a couple of grand on them.
