i'm looking for a cash register software. i've searched around, but the options have all been around USD900, and that's just too expensive. if i can find one that works well and on the right price...i might be able to convince my dad to use a mac in the store.
are there any other more affordable options? thx.

Well I actually have the exact same question.
Gonna open a store and don't want to have an ugly PC infront of the customer.
Any help is much appreciated.

I don't know the software but you could contact an Apple store. They use Macs as cash registers. Same with many Apple dealers.

Their point of sale software is called "POS," and it's proprietary. They'll just direct him to a third party anyway.

Wow, there's tons of pos packages for the mac now!
I helped a friend set up a cash register / inventory system for his store just a few years back and had to go with a windows system. There was -nothing- for OS X.
found this in about 30 seconds: http://macpos.com/ $179
Also found several comparison pages like this - (some are not very recent)

Make sure when you do choose that you can export the raw data. Otherwise you can get locked in, and when the small company goes under 2 years from now you're S.O.L.

Many of the Mac POS systems are based on FileMaker Pro or 4D. Either one of those ensures the data is largely portable.
