The iMac doesn't have a lid that closes.

I stopped by the local MacMall store today and checked out the 15" MBP they had (sorry no 17" models yet out for display) and man-o-man was the screen on that thing horrible! The entire bottom right corner (and partway up the right side of the screen) was really dim compared to other machines they had out -- it was made worse by loading up Safari and loading a page that had a lot of white (such as Google's main page) being displayed.. I can tell you that I'd rather not own that machine..

Anyone care to comment on whether the 17" models exhibit this sort of dim/bright spot issue? There was a 17" powerbook next to it and it didn't exhibit the same issue.. Just curious as I'd love to get an MBP, but will easily get a refurb PB17 if these sort of issues persist for the vast majority of machines being manufactured. I'm looking to buy within the next week or two..

Many TIA!

Couldn't agree more: used to have a Vaio TR-1 (subnotebook) and a Vaio S 13" widescreen laptop, both with X-brite screens. Amazingly sharp and coulourfull. I'm really unhappy with the displays that apple is using in laptops....
After 18 years of MS-DOS and Windows working very happy on Mac, now on a 15" MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz - 2Gb memory - 200 Gb HD with a 20 and 23" screen. I've been waiting for the iPhone for quite a while, let's role it out in Europe. Just one wish left for now: a light mac (2-3 pounds) with 8 hours of working time. They can do it... :-)

This whole thread is really disappointing to me. I planned on buying a new machine + Aperture in the near future for my photography work, but I need the screen on my laptop to be more than OK...

Maybe rev B will be improved by the time I am ready to buy...

I saw the 17" and 15" MacBook Pro at the Apple store yesterday. The screen on the 17" seems to be much brighter than the 15". No uneven illumination on the 17". White was pinkish on the 15" compared to the 17" which was really white. Screen is beautiful. There was only a light stripe at the very bottom of the screen... The 17" was feeling cooler than the 15". Oh yeah, and I tried the new two fingers right click which is pretty cool on the 17" !

I know we are supposed to complain about the new 17" MBP, but I got mine last week and it is great no complaints here, and I am a lifelong Apple fan! Sorry for not whining about a new product....

I'm on a 15'' MBP right now (my wife's) and I just don't see any uneven illumination at all. Its a very good display compared to what I have on my Dell's XPS.

my old 15' in had the gap in addition to all its other problems and what it ment for me is that I was unable to carry the thing around in my backpack in sleep mode because it would turn itself on. I had been doing this with my old ibook for one point five years. and carrying it around was the main reason I got a laptop.

as I read this thread I am wondering if I should of tried to get the 17in upgrade from apple as it does not seem to have the problems of the 15in.

Dunno if the other MBPs have it, but my Rev D. powerbook 17" doesn't. Works like a charm. No idea yet if it works under bootcamp, but I'll give it a try.

Mark
since apple is seeding 10.4.7 to developers, does anybody know if the trackpad feature is included for the 15" MBP and previous PBs?

Questions...

What is the battery life?

As far as weight, does it feel portable or somewhat heavy?
Am I ready for the Mac? I want a 60G iPod!!!!!

Actually, I've hard from people that the new 15'' in the Apple Stores have the new trackpad feature. So that tells me its going to be in the future software updates for sure.

I don't know - my friend didn't tell me. He was just at the Apple store a couple days ago and mentioned it to me. He's in California. I'm about an hour a way from the Apple store so I'm not going to go find out myself
