I think he said he was so Mister Roper and Mister Furley would allow him to live in an apartment with two female roommates.

Wow! What a stunning revelation! You should be up for Post of the Year (and the year is still young)!
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Ummmm..... I know that this is the Lounge and all, and that stuff doesn't have to be terribly logical or focused here, but let me put this plainly: What the HECK was this supposed to be about? And WHY the heck is it here in the first place? Aren't there better ways to waste time and bandwidth?

And for the record, Jack Tripper, the male lead in "Three's Company" was decidedly NOT gay. How could anyone see even one episode of John Ritter's character oggling Chrissie, Susanne Summer's character and think he was gay? It WAS a ploy to get the landlord, Mr. Roper, to let him be a third roomate in the apartment with Chrissie and Janet, because Roper was a dirty old man who didn't think a man could room platonically with a woman. (Of course Janet and Chrissie made sure it WAS platonic, so Roper was discriminating against them as much as against Jack.)

McFarland? Sparrow? Harkness? Bauer? I know it doesn't take a lot but I'm confused.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Tripper. The premise of Three's Company was that Jack Tripper pretended to be gay so his landlord Mr. Roper (later Mr. Furley) would allow him to live with two women. This led to many comic misunderstandings that were the basis of the show's "humor."

I remember being six or so, and my mom saying that she needed to put something in her datebook.

I eyed her suspiciously, because as far as I knew dates were things that Jack Tripper went on with available ladies.

Eventually it got cleared up

"Three's Company" is based on a UK show, "Man About The House".
A fair number of American tv series are NOT original. With few exceptions the humor of the UK original is lost in "translation".

I think he missed April Fools Day. Missed it by that much.

As for "Three's Company," that was positively my favorite comedy as a small child. I know I got a lot of the double entendres even when I was very young. And ra is right, it was a UK import.

I never thought there were so many fans of this show. i grew up on that show as well...i got all 8 season off Amazon 2 months ago for my folks.....had a blast watching them again.

And i guess it is a UK import...i really wonder what that Polish thing on one of the DVDs was...all different actors different location, but definatley a "3's company" of some sort.
