In the last few hours I've had 3 "Kernel Panics", but after turning it off the 3rd time, I got stuck when I started it up. It just hangs on the blue screen where normally the box that tells you its loading comes up.
I tried starting it in Safe Mode, but it does exactly the same thing.
PowerBook G4 12"; OS X.3.4; 768MB RAM

Make sure all usb peripherals are unplugged. Started the PB up in your hardware test cd (placing it in there and then holding the C)
If your unable to that your only recourse is to call Apple.

Should be a white cd, with "powerbook hardware test" written in gray on it. It came in your envelope of CDS when you purchased your powerbook.

Easy test: take out your extra memory, a 512 MB stick according to your message. Chances are you have bad memory. The Apple Hardware test would prove this out, if it can boot.

Unfortunately I don't think I have the Hardware Test CD. Would this work:
Start up from the Mac OS X Install Disk by inserting the disk and restarting your computer holding down the C key.
Choose Installer>Open Disk Utility and select the disk in the left column.
Click First Aid.
Click Repair Permissions.

Disk Utility won't test for hardware. If you don't have a CD, hopefully there's an AppleStore near you that you can take your laptop to the GeniusBar and they can test it.
You might be able to call Apple and have them send you a free CD.

OK, thanks. I'll take it into the ApppleCentre tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who replied.
