I suspect Donald Trump will either be an unexpectedly outstanding POTUS or an unmitigated disaster. There will likely be no in between.

I saw a suggestion that Obama should have resigned a couple go days ago and sworn Biden in real quick. The upshot being that all Trump's merch would be garbage because he'd now be 46th. I wish Obama had done that.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Honestly, I think he's going to live up to all the pessimism the right had about Obama being inexperienced. This guy has no idea what he's doing. And so long as America doesn't have to handle a crisis, that might be for the best.

Is it normal to gag all these departments in the early days? The gag order that says HHS can't talk to congress strikes me as... bad.

I hear the press are being charged with rioting for covering the unrest during the inauguration. I also hear that Ted Cruz is refusing to make appointments to see constituents and that some politicians in Texas have called the cops on people trying to talk to their representatives. Not sure if that includes Cruz.

Are any of you starting to get genuinely concerned yet?

The people who voted for him (plus CTP) don't seem to see what he is like at all. Hence the snowflakery requires highlighting to them until they get it.

The feds are broke. Until we get our financial shit together, many studies and programs will need to be placed on mothballs. We need to get back to neutral on the budget (I'm not even talking about the debt), at our current descent we only had another decade before full collapse, tops.

Yeah, definitely a publicity stunt.

Yes, you're right. We should put all those people on unemployment, where they can join those already there. That way we can grind the economy to a halt, as no one will be able to afford living any more, and we can all then enjoy unemployment.

or they can get new jobs in that segment of the private sector, which is enjoying very low unemployment?

When it's as obvious as the nose on your face, denial isn't a river in Egypt! I'm sure, however, that you know much more about this than he does, right? The man is a pathological liar, with an insatiable ego, driven by a never ending feeling of insecurity. A 70 year old man, with the temperament of a six year old, who is up @ 3 a.m., tweeting insults to world leaders, causing stock price dips, and who fires off executive orders, without consultation with his staff, like a bull in a china shop, is not fit to be the President of the school safety patrol, let alone the United States. He's just gone after the Pope as well, as he can't possibly conceive that he isn't right. As the article says, a narcissist in his category is incurable. They are unable to form actual human bonds, and that often includes family. He is known to have no social life, other than business dinners and business events. He claims to be friends with people, like Bill and Hillary, but as soon as they no longer suit his purpose, he turns on them and discards them. As soon as Melania is no longer useful to him, he will dispense with her as well (one can already see how he's treating worse and worse in public; one can only imagine what their relationship is at home).

My ex-wife is a psychoanalyst, published extensively in the field. She sees it, as do others, who are breaking the Goldwater ethics rule, because he is, IN FACT, dangerous!

It's damned brilliant, he's: fragmented the Left while stripping them of political power, disoriented and shaken-up the MSM, and cast misdirection away from the things he doesn't want the establishment to pay attention to. You guys get so outraged over what he says, you barely pay attention to the things he does.

He's almost the perfect incarnation of Teddy Roosevelt 2.0. Seriously, go read the newspapers and journals during Teddy's presidency, they said the exact same about him, and while I don't expect Trump will be wrestling Putin in the rose garden (that would be suicide, Putin's a red belt (3x BB) in BJJ), I wouldn't be shocked if he hosted Wrestlemania just to make your heads twist off.

Because you've never studied the T. Roosevelt presidency, the guy was a madman. Congress wouldn't pay for a world tour of the US Navy, so he sent the fleet half way around, then left them there (I believe it was in the Philippines), making congress panic and pay for the remainder of the trip. He was definitely one of my favorites.

I'm definitely no expert on Teddy, but I did happen to read up on him a bit since he was an interesting intersection of two of my fields of post-secondary study (biology/environmental science, and the history of modern warfare).

So yeah, Teddy was crazy-town insane in some respects (I think Dan Carlin has some interesting thoughts in his Hardcore History podcast on the Spanish-American war). But let's be clear here - for his day and his time, I don't think Teddy Roosevelt was anywhere near as regressive as Trump (or perhaps more importantly, the people he has hand-picked).

I think you are exaggerating similarities between Trump and Roosevelt. Roosevelt came from a very wealthy family, had a populist streak (like his nephew and future president), he was a square peg not fitting into round political holes and did things that were and would be deemed unacceptable. Circumnavigating Congress is certainly one thing here. But there are very important differences, most notably Roosevelt wasn't all talk. He gave up his appointment as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to go to war against Spain on Cuba (as second-in-command of the Rough Riders), where he gained a reputation of heroic, albeit reckless behavior. After he was shot, he insisted on giving a speech at a rally instead of going to the hospital. And his racist views were tempered with time and experience, he was the first President to invite an African American (the author Booker T. Washington) to dinner. He supported a mix of jingoistic and socialist policies, progressivism with traditionalism. Roosevelts feats made him very popular, he beat out several other Republicans, who then decided to make him Vice President to get rid of him. I mean, what's the chance of a sitting President dying in office

Trump isn't that, he opted not to go to Vietnam, and he doesn't look like he could compete with Vladimir Putin in Judo or wrestling either. Nor is popular or progressive, quite the contrary. I think a much more accurate, but not perfect political figure is Silvio Berlusconi. Although I have to say, and I never thought I pay a compliment to Berlusconi, is that he was way more skilled being and staying in power. Trump's ineptitude is on display, even if you agree with all of his policies, his first two weeks in office are a collection of unforced errors.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
