OK.

I'm really sick of apple not at least having an option, lest a standard for a two button scrolling mouse.

This is a simple petition online:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/713808574

(with a horrible url no less)

I signed, but this isn't going to work since Steve Jobs still only thinks that the one button mouse is all that's needed for Apple and sees no point of going to a 2 button mouse.

times, they are a changin'?

With some pretty major mindset-shifts, could Uncle Steve be 'thinking different' ?

As much as I would never use a one button mouse, this has been covered many times. It is better to have the standard one button mouse so developers do not get lazy.
If you really want a two button mouse go buy a third party one.

Graphic designer in NYC.....Everyone I know tosses out the Apple mouse and gets a inexpensive Logitech 2 button scroll button mouse...they are like 20 bucks at Staples.

Apple's "pro" mouse is really only suitable for those with learning disabilities, and the very old who are perhaps losing their mental edge as time goes on.

one button mouse IS the symbol and tradition for Macintosh...
I am fine with the Pro mouse even thought I have a Logitech wheel mouse and MX700 lying around.

I also use my pro mouse, and I have no problems with it.

I may not be a graphics designer, but the needs I have - to be able to do my school work - it fits well.
I have purchased an PowerMate that I use all the time, at it seems to be a good combination.

I can see the problem from the other side, but I don't think it will help making a online petition...

Good luck though.

I use both,
my Cube has the pro mouse while my PB has a logitech mouse. I find that petitions have zero amount of influence (at least online ones) and are a waste of time.

I would love to see an apple two button mouse, but I'm not holding my breath.

Leave the one button mouse!

It's worth more as a symbol at this point. Yes, 2 mice buttons are better, but there's a certain nostalgia to getting just one button.

As long as Steve Jobs is running the company, I don't think we'll ever see a two-button mouse. And I'm sure he doesn't give a care to online petitions. I can't think of any instance where they've been effective.

They should come out with an optional multi button mouse.

They'd sell quite a few I think. Certainly a lost sales opportunity for them.

It's great that the one button mouse is a symbol, but if we're paying 1,000 plus for a computer it would be nice to have a mouse that was actually functional. There is a functional right click built into OS X, but no one knows about it.

I agree, I think Steve Jobs should think different. You don't have to do away with the one button mouse, just offer people a choice.

I'm sick of this whole "petition" thing. having said that i repespect your right to start one.

Just don't think its going to make a difference.

In the time you waste with it you would have been able to buy a multi button from a 3rd party if you charge for you time by the hour.

It would be a real option if you wouldn't have to pay for the original mouse with each Mac.

You wouldn't be saving a whole lot if you were able to drop the cost of the mouse from the purchase price.

If I had the choice between only $2.50 and a mouse I never use I'd take the money.

Apple make great hardware.

I love the symbolism, implication and elegance of the single button mouse. Where else would you see such a pervasive expression of one CEO's ideology.

Thanks for people pointing out other options are available. An Apple choice would be great. Other 2 button mice (BT, wireless, & corded) fall short of the aesthetic and technical perfection of apples corded and BT mouse. Unforunately there aren't many companies who can understand/make hardware like Apple.

The argument/petition is not to phase out the single button mouse. It is iconic as Macintosh is. The argument is for Apple to bring out a multi-button BT mouse. An "applesque", elegant, sophisticated, yet stupidly-simple solution to having different modes and scrolling in a pointing device. A device which is an intelligent evolution of a beautiful solution. the two button/scroll mouse as we know it ('pioneered' by microsoft) is merely an augmentation of apples "idea". It is "more of" and "in addition to" a stroke of genius that was the original apple mouse/screen cursor. The tablet is a metaphoric device.

They already own a patent for multistage clicking mouse (soft for stage one click, soft+more force - activates the second stage) and doubtless many more. Perhaps we will see something.. but probably not.

In considering it, the single button mouse 'is' perfect.

multi function mice & expose, just monulmentally transform the experience of os x. Like the mouse, expose is genius - subtle, stupidly simple. A new pointing device/screen metaphor system which embraced this genius will be hard to arrive at, but one can always dream and wait with bated breath, can't they.

I'd probably still buy a 3rd party mouse to best suit my needs anyway. It's no big deal.

It's also ridiculously tiny. Great for a portable one, awful for everyday use.

I'd always buy a third-party mouse anyway. I have a Logitech MX700 - 8 buttons. Great for Expos!

Luca,

Does the MX700 ever not react for short periods of time. I own a m$ wireless using USB overdrive and the thing that drives me nuts is that if i don't touch the mouse for a while. Then try and move it, it takes a half second to respond sometimes.

Maybe its that the driver is not low enough? or might be the optical of this mouse?

uggg..

does the mx700 do the same?

It only does that if I haven't used it for a long time. I've never had that happen except when I first sit down to my computer - even after typing for a long time. I think that when you give input to the keyboard, it keeps the mouse "awake," and the "sleep" that causes the lag is likely a power saving feature. Of course, it might be because I have a wireless keyboard-mouse set (the Cordless MX Duo), but a while back I had an MX700 by itself and I never had that problem. It's a great mouse, I normally am not a fan of wireless but because of the placement of my computer stuff, even the long cord on my MX500 would barely reach and sometimes pulled. Not good at all.

I think they should have either two mouses with each mac or an option to choose a different mouse on their website at no extra charge.
Even more imaginative would be to develope a mouse that the button can be removed and replaced with two clip on buttons. The sensors for a mouse click could just be registered as a 'left' mouse click when both are press which is what the mouse would sense when the 'one button' is clipped on(ie it would cover both sensors inside the mouse.

so all of you complaing are telling me that your controll button doesn't work any more. Mine works fine and I get my jobs done. The one button means simple and easy to use. And most people don't know how to use a left click. Also what if you were left handed then what. Most people don't know the system prefs. come on don't be lazy now. lol.
