I recall a friend had images on his iphone a few months ago, and he was zooming in by pinching and I was able to see great detail in the photos.

I cannot do this, and across the internet it seems the same for everyone. I have loaded 1000px wide jpegs onto my phone, yet I can't zoom in at all beyond the iPhone's screen resolution. Tell me there's a workaround?

Why don't you ask your friend?

Well, I would think you can only zoom in to the same resolution that the website is showing the pics at.

How is that surprising ?

I think that photos sent over to the iPhone from your Mac are somehow optimised so that their resolution is close to the screen of the iPhone. This keeps their file size low, of course, but does mean that zooming is not possible. I hate this because I have a few high resolution images of (say) my main passport page which on previous phones I have been able to zoom up when I need to see various bits of important information (e.g. passport number). I can't do this with the iPhone it seems.

Oh, I C, it's not about pics on teh web, it's about pics transferred to the iPhone.

I just downloaded a hi-res pic on my iPhone (using Briefcase).
Zooming in works, but of course, not by pinching.

If you send a higher resolution image to your iphone via email, or download it via safari on the phone, it will only display at the iPhone's screen resolution. Emailing that same photo back out sends a crappier version of your original. So lame.

Interesting. I'll try Briefcase out.

Try this: Download a high resolution image via safari on your phone. Now go to your camera roll and see if you can zoom in at original quality. Same thing happens if you get the image thru Mail app on the phone.

Went on Mobile Safari, Goolge Image search, opened a 7MB pic hi-res.

Can't zoom in to full resolution.
Saved it to camera roll, resolution is even worse

You are right, it seems that when you go the web / email route, you lose the high resolution.

With Briefcase, I seem to get a higher resolution, but even that seems to be limited.
I don't have access to my Mac right now, so I can't check how much detail I get compared to pulling up the pics directly.

Unless you have an iPhone 3GS, your iPhone only has about 30MB of available RAM to play with for any apps. If you were trying to load a single e.g. 40MB high-res image for display, just how well do you think your phone would be able to cope with it?

By high-resolution I mean 1000 pixels on the long end. Enough to at least be able to zoom in on a photograph to see detail. 40MB files? Nobody's trying to load a full size TIFF from a Pro DSLR here!!

The images I'm trying to load are around 500k-1MB. iPhone can handle it.

Here is how to view high resolution images clearly:

1. To get the image into phone, either email it to yourself, or get it from a webpage. Touch and hold on the image and click Save. It will save to the default photo library. DO NOT use iTunes to sync the image, it will downsample the image to a blurry mess.

2. The default photo app will make the image blurry, so use an app like "Full-Res" from Big Air Software (as a disclaimer, it's my app) to view the image. It will be displayed at the full resolution with the ability to zoom all the way in to see the details and read the text.

I hope this helps...

"Full Res" is great.
I'm using an iphone 1.
I'm downloading maps to view on my holiday offline.
Some maps are upto 5000x5000px.
It works!
It can take 1min or so to 'focus' (5000x5000), but it does it.
It's blurry, and then clears up the area you are on.
I'm very impressed. Well worth 59p. Cheers.
