I see the skins for mplayer listed in Fink Commander but no mplayer itself. How do I get and install it?

Have you done fink selfupdate recently? I only know of the Aqua mplayer, which you can easily find on VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

you dont have to use it under X11, http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx/

or look at the original mplayer sourceforge page if you really want it to run under X11.
if youre looking for open source stuff, check sourceforge first.
