Wow. I wonder how they're accomplishing that? I know IBM's having trouble with just the 90-nm. Intel's already moving to 65 and then 45 by 2007.

While I still think that the Cell architecture is the future of computing, perhaps an Intel/IBM alliance is plausible. The new Cell architecture is open for any manufacturer to take advantage of.

Perhaps IBM/Toshiba/Sony can be middle-mans raking in the dough through licensing while Intel fabs out kickass processors.

I can hope, anyway. Sh*t, Intel for Apple? Anything seems possible in tech now.

I still think the Cell is the way to go. Even just the concept. Having modular CPUs that can automatically detect each other, and form computer meshes in an instant... that's just cool.

But you can also isolate the CPUs and have them do specific tasks. OK, turning my geek on again. This reminds me a lot of Star Trek and how the computer theoretically works there. There's a main core, but everything has it's own little CPU that connects to the main computer. The main core (from what I can remember from TNG) is also made up of thousands (millions?) of isoliniar chips. So every time a PADD (laptop), or replicator (microwave/refrigerator), whatever connects, it automatically becomes a part of the main computer.

You can only go so far with a single chip. Clustering seems like the next step. Then after practical quantum computing comes around, all that clustering can be increased in power exponentially.

When I see working 45 nm chips I will believe they exist

PS: .45? Point what?

cheers

Cell would take a lot of rewriting by Apple to use. It also would run normal consumer applications much slower (not to mention apps would have to be recoded, not just recompiled to run. Think of all the Intel whining now and multiply it by 3 million). I mean.. think of something like Address Book. Normal application. It would run much slower on cell because it could only use one cell. You couldn't multithread it. App launching would be slow too. Cell would be nice once you get past all the rewriting only for pro users who do a lot of multi tasking. But Apple is going for consumer space, and I think with Intel they can still do well in pro space too.

A few months ago I would have said: "who cares ?". Now I'm saying: "Go, Intel!". Aaah, the hypocrisy...

IMHO, the Intel switch isn't a major issue... Historically they seem to have offered faster CPUs. IBM/Moto will spike from time to time, but they just aren't as consistent... and I question their commitment to PC CPUs.

If Apple really does have the superior OS (which I believe they do) why gamble the platform on IBM chips? It makes sense just to remove the CPU from the equation.
