After a power surge, a 2MB L3 cache chip on one processor of my Dual 800 got fried. Actually, it's my mum's Mac, but I do all the maintenance on it. Now on every boot all L3 cache is disabled, so in effect its a dual 800 with 2x 256k L2 cache. How much will this impact performance; will she notice bearing in mind her needs are mostly safari and photoshop?

It'll impact performance pretty heavily, especially in more heavy duty tasks.
But for the most part... Meh. It's a 6 year old machine. Be happy it survived the surge.
That said, if you haven't already disabled L3 cache using Apple's CHUD Tools, I suggest doing so to prevent any 'hiccups'.

If she's happily using that machine, she might not even notice. I would recommend you get a powerstrip with surge protection, they are fairly cheap.
Also, keep an eye on that machine, perhaps other parts might be damaged, too, (e. g. RAM or power supply) which might lead to stability issues.

Thanks, I'll definitely be getting surge protector so this doesn't happen again.
Would there be a way to:
- either disable just one processor's complete L3 cache (the one with the bad chip);
- disable *half* the complete L3 cache, thus using 2x 1MB L3 (assuming that only 1 of the 4 chips is fried)?
How cost effective are G4 upgrades these days for a Quicksilver?

My QuickSilver is still going strong, but remember that its bus is relatively slow, you need a pci card for hard drives bigger than 128 gigs and its 1.5 gig ram limit is going to choke a supercharged processor. Your milage may vary!

Thanks.
I'm keeping an eye out for a replacement processor. Maybe I can get one cheaply from someone's old QS/MDD.
Does anyone know how compatible MDD CPUs are with Quicksilvers - especially the dual 867, which also has a 133Mhz bus?
