My internet connection is ADSL and the correct maximum MTU is 1458, as configured in my modem/router's setup webpage. Should I set my Mac's Airport interface to 1458 as well, as it seems to default to 1500?

In general, you'd better leave it as-is. You won't gain anything significant if you tweak it by a few bytes.
In detail - how is your ADSL connected to the computer? USB? Ethernet? Wireless?

It's wireless.
I ask this because I've read somewhere that a computer's MTU should match the modem/router – otherwise there could be packet fragmentation.

Since the connection between your ADSL modem and computer is a few times faster than the ADSL connection itself, you will feel no difference. And besides, the recommended MTUs for WiFi and ADSL are different anyway. And finally - the ADSL router will handle the differences between MTUs by itself - it's designed to do that all the time.

OS X, since at least Tiger (and back to Panther at least, IINM) automatically detects its routing and adjusts the MTU accordingly. You CAN set this manually if you like, but why not let the OS do it for you?
