I was referring to the word, and more specifically, to the negative hype around it. I personally know a lot more than 10 people from outside London who not only use it, but use it to great derogatory effect.

You see, that means nothing to me, because I have no idea how to use this 'emo' thing. Maybe my age is a factor : 37.

Saying that I've been reading the wikipedia article on emo music and suddenly find that lots of bands that I listened to are now in the emo bracket. In 10 years time, there'll be another category and I'll be equally clueless.

OK, so I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but apparently I'll need to provide a more elementary explanation:

So let's start with "emo": My understanding of "emo" is that it is short for emotional, and it it is used to describe teenagers who are in the emotional roller-coaster phase of adolescence and they go for the more "Everything sucks and no one understand me" point of view. Most people, including fellow teenagers who don't go to the "Everything sucks" POV, find the emo subset to be quite whiny and annoying with their anti-social behavior as well as every "bump in the road of life" brings them to tears and/or hysteric outburst.

Linkin Parks 'Numb' is an emo song expressing how he feels "The world sucks and no one understand him" so emotionally he saying he's "numb" to the world.

An air temperature of 10(F) and below will make skin physically numb quite quickly. Living in Northern New England, it's a temperature range that frequently occurs this time of the year.

So what this persons' quote is really saying is:

I'm really cold but I'm not whining about it (even though in a way, they are). That's why I find the statement funny.

Hence why I want to take you up on Mount Washington. I think an experience like that would be the good old "don't judge a man until you've walked in his shoes"-esque experience needed.

If simply standing up their in the freezing wind doesn't make you see the humor, then perhaps I'll bring out the booze to help warm us up, in which case you'll not just find it funny, you'll be singing it!

It’s not that I disagree with it (though I wouldn’t consider Numb a particularly emo song to begin with); it’s just not what I’d consider funny.
