There was a librarian app (forget the exact name) that had a $200 USB bar code reader for easy input of book, CD, and DVD information into its database. It was further reported that this software would sport an innovative iSight barcode recognition algorithm in its next release.

Questions:
1) what was the name of the program; and
2) any news on the iSight-enabled release?

Thanks.

You're thinking of Chronopath's Library. The next major version is undergoing development, and will be released by Delicious Monster, not Chronopath.

With respect to the USB one, you can search up a piece of software called LibraryWorld.

No, Chronopath also sells a barcode reader for use with Library. This reader was a rebadged Intelli Innovations product, but Intelli randomly moved in and wrote a Library competitor (IntelliScanner Collector). Anyway, the Intelli reader is just a rebadged Phoenix II.

Love teh resellorizing.

I'm looking forward to its release even though it won't be able to lookup UK barcode info on dvds etc.

What about Booxter from Deep Prose Software -- does this do what you are looking for?

I think they're either very close to or in beta now, though.

Seems that Booxter already has isight scanning of books and is available now.

Not as clean from an interface standpoint, but ok.

I've heard that the scanning isn't very reliable, though.

I've had mixed results with this (using Booxter). I only got one book to scan with my iSight. Things were much, much better with my DV camcorder, though that may have been because I put it on a tripod and gave it more light. I think you can't expect it to work by just holding a book up to the camera; you should focus your camera at a table, provide plenty of light, and then rest the book on the table. For this reason, I also think an iSight won't cut it, because you'd have to turn off the autofocus and I don't think it has a macro setting.

I've had much better results than that with an iSight with a Library build from a few months back.

I don't have any insider info regarding that, but it is labeled as a beta. It seems as if they've been distributing it to get some bug reports on it. My guess is that we won't see if it for a little longer.

And the screenshots are really impressive. I got the opportunity to give it a run a few months ago and it's really gotten a hundred times cooler. It looks like I'm going to have to buy an iSight and this app just because it's so damn cool

Ditto...I thought the iSight was amazing just for it's iChat video capabilities. I just didn't have the money or AIM friends to justify the purchase.

But since then, games like ToySight and now this amazing app are making appearences.

I might buy that iSight after all. I wonder if there will be a revision of iSight soon? iSight's been out for awhile and I've got a feeling I'll buy it and iSight 2 will be out. (I normally buy my Apple products a week or 2 after its release just so I don't get burned...and I don't see why I should change that habit .)

Actually no, Delicious Monster seemed to be quite surprised when it appeared (not that they were particularly unhappy for the publicity, mind). And yes, it's more than a "few days" away, but it's certainly getting closer

Anyone got a screen shot of what WAS there? As an extreme DVD collector I'm more than anxious.

If you look at the shots on ThinkSecret it looks as if they have applied 3D-like lighting effects to the cover images from Amazon. Makes the books look really real. God-damn, that's attention to detail !

I like the AddressBook-style details interface too.

The ThinkSecret site has a lot more than you would've seen on the official site. It was mostly filler text and old images anyways.

Since I started asking around a little bird told me that it wouldn't be shocking if we were to see a public beta before the end of the month. (fingers crossed)

P.S. The little birds I know tend to be pretty darn informed usually.

Wow, I'm really impressed with those screenshots. I've been waiting for a well done library type app for a while now. The splash screen for the beta just totally rocks though. This looks to be a definite purchase.

The screenshots at ThinkSecret look SWEET. This is the third-party app that most harmonize with the idea of the digital hub, but in the books and DVD stuff. It is a genial idea, I would see that becoming the begin of an iApp which takes the living-room activities and do something nice with them : not only organizing DVD's, but offering previews, ratings, conexion with IMDB. The same for comics and books. There are a lot of people, like me, who loves collecting books, games and movies. The design of the app seems so right, so "apple", that it's impossible not to think in that as a part of iLife.

They (DeliciousMonster) should offer Apple a deal or Apple should talk with them.

--->>>

Pd. Apple should offer something to the people of Kornfabulator, they created an amazing idea also, and Tiger just taked it without major explanation.

They (Delicious Monster) should also provide a way for Library to sync with something on a Palm. Either something they cobble together, or Readerware (which has desktop <-> handheld sync, but its OS X version looks dumb), or even just a Notes category on Palm. That, I'd pay for..

I suppose I should be telling Delicious Monster this..

Perhaps if it doesn't happen, I'll buy the Missing Sync and read up on writing conduits, see if Cocoa development's as easy as everyone claims
