feels like 10.5.3 only it's not.

seriously, updated quickly on my intel and G4 macs, and...life goes on.
as stated above, .mac is still .mac...

Before anyone says "Downloading now!" I don't care. And before anyone says "OMG! It's teh Snappy!" No, it isn't. You imagined it again. And again, I don't care anyway.

Well, I'm gonna wait until Saft is updated for compatibility w/the 10.5.4's Safari build.

Meantime, does it fix CharlesS's huge ridiculous security hole?

Hope this update doesn't break anything. It certainly doesn't add anything (of importance) though there is some mention of having implemented a fix to Adobe's incompetence in programming where saving files on remote servers didn't work reliably.

Another meh™ update from Apple.

Anybody know if Starcraft is finally fixed in this one?

EDIT: A TUAW reader reports that it isn't. Dang.

Service Packs (from the Beast) actually add features, unlike anything that comes from Apple. The Beast supplies bugfixes every other day if you wish to install them.

This update is bugfixes, but mostly it's Mobile Me. That's why we are getting it 'early'. It's only been a month or so since 10.5.3 was released.

When I update my Mac after a multi-megabyte package and a restart, I want to see something more than just bugfixes. I want visible bugfixes.

However, since I am planning to update my iPod touch to the new iPod OS later this month, I'm obliged to update to 10.5.4 on the Mac. That's why I did it, not because I expected anything but the usual 'meh' from Apple.

Nope. Doesn't fix the NVidia UI lockups either. It seems Apple isn't interested in fixing bugs these days until Snow Leopard comes out or something.

Snow Leopard is going to suck because: 1) my computer is already snappy and 2) my computer is already stable.

So what am i going to get out of Snow Leopard if it doesn't have new features? Kinda sucks my computer is awesome right now. Not exactly fair Snow Leopard isn't for me.

Why can't my computer be slow and buggy?

10.5.4 screwed up conversion. On the one hand we have heaps of new currencies which is good:

On the other, conversion is WAY off:

1 Australian dollar = 4.83436513 Norwegian kroner (Google)

1 Australian dollar = 0.9566 US$

1 US$ = 0.635324015 €

This is bad. Really bad.

01/07/08 in this case is July 1st 2008

Could have been January 7th 2008, but not so much outside America.

However, conversion seems to work ok for me in 10.5.4, I don't get the same values as erik.

Fixes the remote saving of Adobe CS files it claims.

Will have to test this once back in the office. That one made my working day a real chore! I kept forgetting not to save PS files back to the server which was annoying when they helpfully corrupted.

General
• Includes recent Apple security updates.
• Resolves an issue with saving and reopening Adobe Creative Suite 3 files on a remote server.
• Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.
• Addresses an issue that may result in a partially installed X11 application.
• Improves L2TP VPN client reliability.

AirPort
• Addresses AirPort reliability issues with 5GHz networks.
• Addresses AirPort issues that may result in slower performance in Logic Studio or MainStage.

iCal
• Improves overall iCal reliability for meeting requests, cancellation notices, delegation, and syncing with iPhone.
• Resolves an issue that prevents deleting an iCal event without notifying the creator.
• Addresses an issue in which events in all calendars affect availability. A checkbox now enables information-only calendars to be transparent from free/busy lookups.
• Resolves a UI issue preventing delegated calendars from showing up as a separate window.
• Addresses an issue with copying and pasting attendees from one event to another.
• Resolves an issue in which iCal may not delete events after a specified time interval, even when set to do so in iCal preferences.
• Addresses an issue in which To Dos cannot be marked private.

Safari
• Addresses a potential performance issue when loading secure web pages.
• Resolves issues that may be encountered when accessing secure web pages with client certificates that reside on a smart card.

Spaces and Exposé
• Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.
• Fixes an issue in which dragging an application from the list of application assignments in Spaces System Preferences does not assign the application to the desired space.
• Resolves an Exposé issue that may result in only a subset of windows being shown.

For me this is huge. Really huge.

I'm not sure whether it was a result of 10.5.4, the Airport firmwares that were also released, or a combination of the two, but something resolved a really crazy issue I was having in which I was unable to connect to some websites.

More specifically, I have two routers: TC and AE (Gigabit). The TC is the main router connected to my cable modem. The AE "extends" my wireless network and provides the wireless connection for my Mac Pro. On any 802.11n radio mode, my Mac Pro could get to most websites, but not all. Only computers connected through my TC, the main router, could get to all websites. It was so frustrating.

Glad it is resolved.

For me it happens when I'm running under extensive CPU load such as video encoding. The UI freezes even though the computer is still running just fine. I'm able to ssh into the box to gracefully shut it down. It's been happening since 10.5.0 for me. (I must confess this is on a "hackintosh" but it seems this is a problem on "real" Macs as well. My trusty "iHack" is all I have left now that my PowerBook was stolen and my SO dumped water all over his MacBook rendering it useless. Saving up for a new 17" MacBook Pro )

That's been driving me nuts. another "bug" (feature?) that's been bothering me with spaces is if I click on the desktop in a space that doesn't have a Finder window open in it, it switches to a space that does. I've had to get in the habit of populating each space with at least one Finder window.

It happens on "real Macs" that have NVidia GPUs in them. This is because Apple's NVidia drivers suck.

For me, it doesn't have to be a high load either - for example, it happens reproducibly every time I use Front Row, making this Apple Remote I paid for a complete waste of $15. But I've also had it happen when using other apps that utilize the GPU, and one time I even had it happen while using Exposé. I can SSH into the computer to reboot it, but the UI locks up. 10.5.3 improved things a little where sometimes if I'm lucky, the UI can "snap out of it" after a few minutes. However, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it results in a screen that looks like this:

It's the most irritating software bug I've encountered in years. I wish Apple would put some engineers on fixing this instead of iCal To Dos not being marked private or whatever this update was supposed to fix. Until then, I'm stuck in OS 9 land where any one app can easily take down the whole OS. I'm sure they won't fix it until I'm ready to buy my next machine, which if at all possible will have an ATI GPU and not an NVidia (or even integrated graphics, where I'd still get to use the GPU more than I do with this).

Windows and entire apps disappearing and no way to see them without restarting or turning off Spaces. Pallets also don't show up in Photoshop sometimes.

This happens to me EVERY single day on every computer I use with spaces. So far so good though with 10.5.4.

All the applications will be smaller and hopefully more optimized for the intel processors. I'd say that in and of it self is a huge deal. Apple will of course add lots of little functional improvements, but they haven't said much about them yet, I doubt it will be devoid of any new features.

Also if you have the nvidia card (which you do) I doubt your machine is stable, as I haven't worked with a single intel mac that had an nvidia GPU and was stable.

It's not really right to complain about something when almost nothing is known about it.

Prior to the 10.5.4 update, I was getting lines like this after a TM update:

Jun 27 18:29:23 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[111]: StatusMonitor::volumesChangedCallBack returned -47

After the update, I don't seem to be getting them anymore. Anybody else notice this? If 10.5.4 fixed the problem, I shall be most grateful.

UPDATE: Well, I still got the error when doing a wireless backup...but the error has not re-appeared after the Time Capsule firmware update.

Looks like they're making iCal more stable before mobileme/iphone 3G users begin to depend on it as their sole appointment database.

None of the bugs I've reported repeatedly were fixed, and some that 10.5.3 fixed have risen up again. I'm not a fan .

Maybe 10.5.5?

• iTunes dashboard widget has never worked, and is still easy to crash, so I keep reporting its issues.
• Randomly after waking from sleep, the display reverts to the nasty default Color LCD, until I go to the Display prefpane.
• Randomly after waking from sleep, the graphics corrupt in Safari, iTunes, Office 2008, Finder, etc.
• Randomly after waking from sleep, Finder refuses to reconnect to SMB shares, saying the connection timed out when this is absolute rubbish. Removing authentication details from Keychain does not help. (10.5.3 actually seemed to fix this, but 10.5.4 broke it again.)
• FTP shares cannot be browsed in Finder beyond three directories deep; trying causes them to time out and disconnect. This does not occur using the command line, or using Vista on boot camp on the same machine.
• Randomly on startup or wake-from-sleep, the machine will not automatically connect to a preferred network, and sometimes even requires re-entered credentials.
• Often when switching between apps, the menubar does not update to reflect this. Keyboard shortcuts still work but menus do not. An easy to repeat instance of this is with desktop alerts from Microsoft Entourage.
• Sometimes stacks become unresponsive to clicks (not often on this machine though).
• If the folder of a stack has its icon changed, the dock will forget this on startup and show the old one.
• On starting up after using Windows on boot camp, the time is 12 hours out. While Vista happily corrects for this on startup, OS X still does not, until prompted by a trip to the Date & Time prefpane - even this doesn't always correct it, and oftentimes manual correction is required.

Others have also described repeatable crashes with Mail, and I'm sure I missed at least one of my own issues. Never had any from 10.1.2 to 10.4.11.

Is this any FTP share or just a particular one? Because there are subtle differences in the way servers handle things that can make certain sites behave strangely depending on your client. I use one that won't let me download anything in command-line FTP, won't even let me access the share from Cyberduck, but works perfectly in Fetch.
