It is from my 1996 Jetta

It's leaking oil and I need to change it, but I don't know what it's called. There's a guy that told me, but he only knows the name in Spanish.

so, after searching around web, I finally ask you guys since there are a lot of car buffs here.

cheers in advance.

EDIT: It's the piece in the center of the red square with larger version on the side. It has a black cover on it. On the side bottom photo, I pulled that cover up.

I don't know, but I'm sure you could print that photo off and go to a parts store and they would tell you.

Looks like the PCV valve or some other emissions thingie. Something along those lines. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's literally gushing out. Get it fixed though.

The photos to the side are closer version. And yeah, I should have printed the photo, but I wanted to order the part. I'll guess I do that next.

Ah, okay. There are 3 parts stores within 1/2 mile of my house, so I'm spoiled and don't think to order car parts. I just point and say give me (i'm so not a car person) if it is something I can figure out. I'm set up for woodworking, not mechanics.

If this is what you are having problems with: http://www.car-stuff.com/vwoxygensensor.htm compared with this photo and yours? Yeah...why would oil be coming out of it?

I still say its a PCV valve, positive crankcase ventilation, or sometihng along those lines. They get nice and oily and if they get plugged up they can cause problems and they sometimes leak a bit around where they're attached. Whatever. Take better pics dude.

Oh sh**, my bad dude. I just looked closer (and should know considering the amount of VW's I've owned)...but that looks to be attached to your cooling system and you might be mistaking what's coming out of it as oil when it really is not. If this is the case it might just well be the temperature fan switch based on where it's located and what it is attached to......

....takes second look.....

yup, judging by the greenish corrosion on the clamp coming out below (coolant hose clamp) it's the cooling system, and that is the temperature fan switch. Has the car been running hot?

I don't think so. Although it has been leaking what seems to be oil ? And I did have an issue with coolant last week, where it didn't have any (i'm really a n00b when it comes to cars).

That's a problem. What colour is whatever is leaking out? When you say it did not have any do you literally mean NONE or just really low?

It looks to me like the oil temperature probe/sensor. Classic VW looking. Is it an auto or 5 speed? If it's auto, then it could be transmission fluid temp probe. But I hardly know automatic transmissions at all.

It looks like either an oil temperature sensor, oil pressure sensor, or a coolant temperature sensor (either for the dashboard gauge or a switch for the electric cooling fan on the radiator).

In any event, it should be easy to tighten or replace.

If it's screwed in just above the oil filter housing - it's an oil sensor (aka, sending unit)

If it's screwed in just above a coolant manifold - with big rubber hoses - it's some sort of coolant sensor.

It's not in any Spanish resources I have here: Danish/Spanish dictionaries, El Pequeño Larousse, and diccionarios.com.

Although it is a non-existing feminine form of vólvulo, which means volvulus, i.e., obstruction of the intestines. Maybe he was just saying that the car is screwed big time, 'cause someone twisted this thingilingy, whatever it is?

Even my 1,979 page Oxford Spanish dictionary didn't have that one. Damnit, now I'm on a mission.

Looks like a temp sensor of some kind. Put a wrench on it and tighten it down a little. If that doesn't work, take it off and take another car to a parts store and buy a new one.

And if you don't have access to a parts store locally, email the pic to a VW part supplier with the other info of what year, model, engine, and transmission it has and see if they can tell.

As Spliff said, that should be "Válvula", which means exactly "valve". "Volvula" doesn't exist in Spanish.
Nevertheless, I am clueless about if that is the correct name for that part and how it is said in English. Sorry, the only help I can bring you is a native Spanish speaker confirmation of what Spliff said. If I happen to come accross some mechanical-prone friends, I'll ask them.

Y no entienden nada... ¡y cómo se divierten!...

My money is on either a temperature or pressure sensor. It's hard to tell without seeing what it's screwed into, and that's obscured. Can you follow the plumbing of what it's screwed into?
