Hey,

When I stop using my MBP, it will spontaneously dim the screen for half a second and return back to its normal brightness.

Also, I noted today that when I've switched the graphic mode from discrete only to automatic switching, I got bunch of artifacts on a lot of thumbnails. Are both those things normal? If not, is there a way to fix it before I decide to go to the Genius Bar?

My screen dims like you describe sometimes. Also when dimmed enough, I notice it flickers quite a bit. Not sure if thats normal or not tbh.
The graphic thing is more worrying to me. I'd get that looked at.
