Office does look on the network for multiple copies running with the same serial, but I believe the edu version includes three licenses.

if you want to be "by the book" read the license agreement that came with her copy and see if the specific wording regarding multiple installs applies to your situation.

As I recall, the license allows for an installation on each of 1 (one) user's desktop and laptop computers. So while sharing it with your girlfriend is technically not allowed... you know... no one cares.

How many students do they reckon will have three computers? And why would they not allow the same courtesy to normal purchasers? I figured the license was to allow college buddies to pitch in and get a copy. (I really can't explain why Microsoft would do that, but nothing else really makes more sense to me.)

Technically, it's so 3 students can share a copy. Better for M$ to get the edu price and it keeps people from openly pirating. Legally, it's supposed to be 3 copies used in house (for a family or roommates).

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I was pleasantly surprised to see three licenses on mine, was nice of Microsoft to do that I guess.

For the original post, I would just use one of her extra serial numbers, don't spend your money on another copy.
