That setup and situation is wild. It will be interesting to hear your developing opinions on a virginal, best possible condition switch to the Mac.

Yeah, and only one 30"-er! Cheap!

I still say the huge plastic 23" is the best display Apple ever made. *cough*

aye, I was wondering that aswell. Last year when they use to have speakers listed it was the Logitech Z-680 THX Certified 5.1 450 Watts Speakers I think. But now they no longer list speakers...

Mono speaker in the G5 case, as it was with the G4 and G3 B&W tower.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

You would think they would supply some decent digital speakers straight out the box.

With all of the selection for speakers (analog and digital), you have numerous options at your fingertips. (from personal experience... stay away from the Logitech 680s ) I'm actually going to purchase the Soundsticks II just because they look so good!

If you check out the forums at Logitech.com you will see that numerous people (including me) have been plagued with hissing/white noise coming from these speakers (which Logitech hasn't done much to fix). If you also do a quick search on the 5500, I think you will be impressed as they don't have as many issues as the 680s.

Though I don't know what the difference is between Soundsticks I and Soundsticks II, they do look good, but certainly sound great. (I have Soundsticks I for years and still am in love with them :-) )

All 100% happy, and will never go back to PC!

I'm considering getting a hold on the Z-680's for my PM. Would this require purchasing a sound card or can I connect them just through the optical port? Thanks!

Well much crongratulations indeed... you are a very lucky peron.

Although if you have that much money, why not make it just blatantly outright ridiculous and trick out with a nice 8GB of ram?

I dont know which to be more happy for you: the fact that youre switching or the machine your switching on! I am sure you will not regret the investment

You can always purchase mine I'm putting them up on eBay this weekend. I enjoy my Harmon Kardon Soundsticks far more! (aside from the fact that they are only 2.1 vs 5.1).

The speakers all connect to the subwoofer and then are controlled by a control module that you can sit on your desk. On the back of this control module are various inputs that you connect to your sound card. The nice thing about this is that is has optical-in.

So in your case, yes, you can either use the analog sound or optical sound out jacks on the back of a Powermac G5.

To get true 5.1 surround however, you need to purchase a soundcard and use the analog cables instead.

The 680s have built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, why would you need or want analog cables? I don't believe there are currently any Mac-compatible sound cards with built-in Dolby and DTS decoding.

I'm on my first PowerMac (G5 Dual 2Ghz, 250 HD Rev"A", 4 Gbs RAM, 20" Cinema Display, nVidia GeForce 6800 GT DDl, and SoundSticks I + iSub); I upgraded from a Summer 2000 DV SE iMac which never failed until I gave it to my son. It got fried in an electrical storm. No surge protection. Ouch! My poor little iMac!
Incidentally, is there a difference in sound between the soundsticks I and II?

Actually you could be right, and I might be confusing it with the PC (but considering that I don't know much about the Mac's onboard sound capabilities, I really can't say one way or the other...other than it is going to be behind the PC in terms of gaming). However on the PC side of things, 5.1 surround is a complete sham. You are not getting complete surround sound capabilities if you have a Creative Labs SoundBlaster and something OTHER than Creative Labs' own speakers.... and even then, you have to use analog. Pretty crummy, and you don't even realize it until you read all the fine-print. Regardless, this is a topic for another thread of it's own.

Sorry to hear about your Mac!

I recommend any of the surge protectors from a company called APC. They aren't that expensive and come with a guarantee, that even if they don't manage to save your computer, they cover 'x' amount of dollars (depending on the size of powerbar) to cover your damaged electronics.

The only difference between the Soundsticks I and II is that the Soundsticks I are USB, and the Soundsticks II are analog cable. I went with the Soundsticks II to free up my USB ports.

I'd love someone to explain to me Apples logic on delivery.

On Friday, my order was picked up from Apple in Cork, Ireland.

As of today it is apparently in Luxembourg. i.e. they must have flown right over my house and about 1500 miles IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. To some european distribution centre.

Here the journey it needed to take...
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?spn=4....=dursley&hl=en

and this is where it is!

What on earth is that all about then?

Someone I work with (here in California) ordered a powerbook. I think it went from China to Alaska to someplace around the Great Lakes before it finally found its way here. A strange journey.

The really sad bit is that on Friday, when I knew it was in Cork I did actually think to myself how I could drive over to pick it up rather than have it sit there all weekend. It would only take about three/four hours drive (plus the ferry journey) from my house.

Apparently still in Luxembourg.

I don't understand why it had to go to Luxembourg in the first place (given that it was already in the UK!), let alone why it had to stay there for two days so far...

The mind boggles. Really.

Apparently my mac has now left Luxembourg, heading for.... Apple, Cork!

So apparently it went from Cork to Luxembourg for a couple of days holiday and now its on it's way back to Cork. What's that all about eh?

Same thing happened to mine. I assume the courier is TNT? might just be their route or its cheaper for them sending the bulk that way, you'll never figure out how couriers work :o

I don't know what the order tracking is like in the rest of the world, but from the UK site it's hopeless.

The suspense is killing me!

I think for any future purchases I'll actually physically go to an Apple store.

Luxemburg is the hubsite where TNT collects all "sub shipments" for your Apple order and combines them in one shipment. Apparantly your PM comes from Cork, but other stuff comes from different countries. After combining them in L. they are shipped as one shipment to your home.

For laptops produced in Taiwan or China they are shipped to Luxemburg as well (for European orders) by Kuehne&Nagel, then handed over to TNT.

It appears they prefer shipping stuff around without coming closer to your home instead of shipping multiple smaller packages directly to your home. Sounds like on of those math optimization problems ;-)

Well it's no longer an issue as of course as since the moment it actually arrived on Monday I've been having way to much fun to moan about how they delivered it..

It's rather good...
