Hi gang,

As per usual, the availability of new Apple hardware is lagging a behind in Canada. Compusmart has the G5 arriving in 24 days. They are usually accurate, but a little later than some of the other shops. CSC in Toronto says next week and North Star doesn't know. Anyone else got any Canadian info?

Cheers!

I spoke with them yesterday and they said the Apple rep had told them they were enroute. They still didn't have a date yet, but were hoping for the end of next week. Who knows if that is right or not.

Cheers!

In Calgary, MyMacDealer has nothing yet and has no idea when they will see anything at all... even a demo unit.

The University of Calgary Microstore however says the duals should arrive begening-mid september.

So for me it's a race between the apple store and the University of calgary... I have an order in at both places and apple is telling me October 9th. Whoever gets em first, gets my money.

In Montreal the local Apple resellers all say Sept 17th at the earliest with a "could be earlier" comment put in there for securing deposits.
I'll upgrade to 1.6 ghz G4 and hold off for a year for the 3.0 ghz G5,more so the 2nd gen.

Urgghh.
I never leave deposits. They can have my money when they get my product in. If I give them my money now, what incentive do they have to get my stuff quick?

Also, in Toronto, the store that was most aggressive to ask for deposits went out of business last year. I doubt anyone who had left a deposit with them ever saw a penny back.

Cheers!

Which store was that? The one on Adelaide? CSC and U of T never seem to ask for deposits, at least for stock configs.

P.S. CSC said they hoped to get G5s next week.

That's the one. I can't remember their name now. At one time they were the Newton Store and the Palmtop shop

Well, the G5 is showing up in US stores now. I wonder when the Canadian stores will get them.

The Canadian AppleStore now has the 1.6 at 7-10 days shipping, which is a big drop. Maybe we will see some in stores next week.

Get this (Tuesday AM, Sept 2nd).

U of T computer shop has already shipped its first G5! They took their first delivery last week .... one G5. After processing this massive order, they are now hoping to take delivery of their next shipment by the end of the week.

CSC just got their shipping notice, and should have some within one week.

North Star says not 'till October.

Solutions in Computing says delayed ... 2nd or 3rd week in September.

Compusmart's web site says 13 days.

None of these are the 2 GHZ machines.

Cheers!

So how many did U of T order? I guess I'll be dropping by CSC this week. And what is it with North Star anyway?

I don't know how many U of T ordered, but apparently it was more than one. I can't imagine that the info from North Star is correct. Often they seem to get stock later than others, but other times (ex. iSight), they seem to get stock when everyone else does. In any case, October seems way out of wack. Maybe they were talking about the 2GHz machines.

Cheers!

Mostly Digital (formerly Mostly Mac) in London, Ontario just sent out an email to their customers stating they now have a 1.6 ghz G5 set up in their showroom. London is an hour away from here, so I won't be scooting out to see it, but folks down that way may want to take a peek. Their website is at http://www.mostlydigital.ca

Saw the 1.6 GHz G5 in person at Mostly Digital. Downloaded and installed xBench 1.1 on it. It received an xBench score of 126.

Personally after seeing it I'm going to hold off until the next revision. It's really nice to look at in my opinion, but my Dual 867 MHz G4 is still doing everything I need it to do.

The University of Ottawa now has a 1.6 GHz G5 on demo. You hear it over and over again how you have to see it in person, and they're right... it's beautiful. I had to resist the urge to buy one then and there.

Saw it a CSC. They've got both the 1.8 and th 1.6 on display. Yep, it truly is gorgeous, esp. with the cover off. (I prefer it with the cover on, but it's the only tower I've ever seen that looks good with the cover off.

CPUsed has it now too.

<rant>

Calgary Mac stores are all run by granola d**k heads. I seriously ask myself why I even bought a Mac when I go in there.

Expecially My Mac Dealer
1. they proclaim they have G5s but they are in boxes and are sold.
2. I once bought a game there, told the dude exactly what I would be installing the game on before he sold it to me. When I got home I found out the game only had beta support for my OS. They would not exchange it. I buy two or three games a month from EB and never have problems like this.
3. They sell Warcraft III for $88. I can get this game at Walmart for $40.
