I like the dock on the left side but would like the trash in the bottom right. Is this possible? I notice there is a line between the trash and the rest of the dock.

You can't move the trash as far as I'm aware. You can put it on the desktop, but not move its position in the dock.

Actually, that line is between your applications and the rest of the Dock. The right side of the Dock smushes together documents, folders, windows and the Trash. Unfortunately, you can't move the Trash around on the right side any more than you can move the Finder around on the left side.

There's an easier way. Click the Trash in the Dock to open it. Now click and hold on the trash icon and drag it to the Desktop.
Yes, it will also stay in the Dock, but it should. What most people don't get is that the OS X Trash is the systemwide trash, not just the Finder Trash. You can delete stuff from any app that supports drag and drop by dragging it to the Trash in the Dock - I eg delete emails in Entourage this way.

Some people just like to drag-and-drop. Or, indeed, have the choice

Me neither.
You can put a symbolic link (ln -s ~/.Trash ~/Desktop/Trash) to the trash on the desktop, but haven't worked out how to copy the Trash icon onto it...

Doesn't work for me.
The icon of the alias to the trash won't change from being a folder...

You're right, won't work for me either. Some update must have disabled it, because I did it at some point. Doesn't really matter, by now I prefer it in the Dock. I even prefer the new windowing, believe it or not...
Oh yeah, and making a symlink of the .Trash in your home directory is not a good idea if you have multiple drives, because dragging something from a non-startup drive to that trash will copy it to the .Trash folder and not remove it from its original spot.
