I waded into the pool with my iPhone in my jeans pocket. Today, after about 36 hours of drying out, it's gradually coming back to life. Read more in my blog:
Idle Thoughts: iPhone, Post Swimming Pool
The short version -- everything has come back up, except the touchscreen. About one tap in 20 actually does anything.

Put that bugger in the sun or in a warm room for a few days.

Since it isn't designed to be waterproof, you are screwed. I remember seeing a post that there was a moisture sensor mounted inside the headphone jack that turns red or pink when exposed to water. Check yours.

Dry or new.

After getting wet.

This is how Apple knows you got it wet and voids your warranty!

You know, since I'm colorblind I can't tell a thing about the sensor (or the examples just posted either). Not that I had any hopes of getting Apple to replace it. Especially not after blogging about it. But I'm getting better results today than when I wrote about it earlier. The touch screen isn't reliable enough to answer a phone call quickly enough to catch it, but with patience, I can navigate to the voicemail and return the call.

The diagonal lines on the screen (I show them in the blog posting) are gradually fading from view. I wonder if that's part of the touchscreen grid and once it dries out, things will work better.

Try using a dehumidifier to suck out all the moisture that is remaining inside.

Stick that bugger in a bag of rice!! Nice cheap dehumidifier. Wrap it once in cheesecloth or something so that rice doesn't get in the headphone jack.

Current Status: It is gradually coming back to life. I can use it for most things and I no longer need to get a substitute phone. However, there are still glitches. One time it took me almost ten minutes to get the unlock swipe to take. Occasionally, a center twirl will appear and boot me out of whatever I'm doing back to the wallpaper locked status.

The things that helped most: Turning off auto-lock in preferences and leaving it on the power cord for hours on end showing the buttons or something. The touchscreen always seemed more responsive the next morning when I did that.

I suspect I'll get a 3G in another month or so, but my damaged unit is usable.

Final Status: After two and a half months of erratic behavior, it finally healed. I have had two solid weeks of flawless response, no glitches. I hesitated about posting this until I was sure, but I even bragged to the family that it was okay again, and that would surely have caused it to act up again, but it didn't.

I guess I don't get to upgrade just yet.
