Is there a way to turn off the iBook screen when i attach it to an external monitor, I don't want to close the lid but i just want to dim the screen until it's off.

In Os 9 it is possible to dim the screen totally while I can work on the external screen normally.
But in Os 10.1(.2) the external monitor acts normal, except for the last step, the LCD display will dim totally, and the external monitor will do the same.

I also have another problem the screen seems to be darker than when i bought it but i can't find a way to turn it back the way it was.

I hope that anyone has a solution for my problems.

See the escape key?

See the key to it's right, labeled F1? That dims the screen. You can turn it off with this.

See the key to the right of F1? F2 brightens the screen.

See the last post? When you turn the screen off with F1, you also turn off the external monitor or TV... I'm quite sure hsl know about the F1 and F2 buttons.

Regarding hsl's questions, I can't help him, but shares his annoyance about this issue. Hope others have a solution.

I also have another problem the screen seems to be darker than when i bought it but i can't find a way to turn it back the way it was.
I had some brightness problems in 10.0.4
If I booted in OS9 and dimmed the screen then booted back to 10.0.4 without setting it to maximum it would not be possible to brighten it.

The solution was to reboot into 9 to put the brightness back up and back to 10.0.4 again. (this hasnt happened since I upgraded to 10.1 though)

I'm assuming it's a problem with the MacOS X iBook video driver where it takes mirroring a bit too far. I hope it gets updated in the next OS update.

I have the same desire (I have a 19" monitor attached and I use it whenever I am at home). Until OS X v10.1 I could dim the iBook LCD and the monitor would stay on, but now the external monitor stays on until the LCD backlight goes off, then the ext monitor goes off, too. Frustrating, to say the least.

I have no idea why they "fixed" this, but I want it back the way it was. It was nice to be able to save the LCD backlight while I'm home and still use the monitor. I read that the LCD really doesn't wear out, but the backlight will last longer if you save it (using the Energy Saver preferences) as much as possible.

I have no fix, just wanted to put in my two cents.

Not sure if this is an isolated case, but in OS X on my iBook I can dim the screen until it is totally black. In 9, if I look really closely I can still see the screen a bit.
