When two firewire hard drives are DIRECTLY connected to a PM G4 DP 867MHz MDD, they won't mount. Yet each will mount when by them self.
This is a problem because I need to transfer data between them. Is there a known issue with the FW controller in this mac?

Are they both bus-powered? If so, they're overloading the G4's available bus power. Plug them into a powered hub to solve the problem.

Are you daisy-chaining them?

I tried both ways (direct & daisy). One drive will only mount at a time.
The (royal pain in the) work a round was to install an additional drive in the desktop to temporally store the data for offloading. 30GB at a time, moof! Oh did I mention that I had to pull the drive from another computer?
Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I've heard that G4s had problems with Firewire daisy chaining.

Not an uncommon issue. Apple even has a knowledgebase item about firewire iPods and iSights not working at the same time. The solution is to use USB.
