'Earthscraper' concept hides a 1,000-foot skyscraper underground | DVICE

Now that just seems wrong. I can't say I'd like to be trapped 300m below ground in the middle of Mexico City, but that's just my opinion.

Imagine the sort of fun you could have if a sewer main burst just below the ground floor.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I wouldn't want to be trapped in the middle of Mexico City, regardless of elevation.

I guess if it caught fire you could just fill the hole in with water, but I guess that would suck for all the people in the building...

Looks awesome. Also, they could make the elevators into large stand-up tanning beds. Get it? Oh, you get it

Isn't Mexico City built on the site of Tenochtitlan, which itself was built on a lake (not islands in the lake, for the most part, but actually on the lake)? I can see digging into an area of the city which isn't actually on the lake, but won't the proximity of that much water still cause problems?

Assuming that can be dealt with, though, I like the design. Especially the shaft down the middle to let natural light in; that's brilliant.

They should build this thing in an active fault rather than the lake bed. Or better yet, find an active volcano and build it in there. Yeah, that's a great idea.

My first thought before pix: claustrophobia setting in if my office was in the bottom. Then I saw the pix with light in the middle.

My next thought was that people would throw crap into the light tunnel.

I agree with andi's second point-the inside would collect trash and worse. And considering that Mexico City has a major problem with people disposing of chewing gum nearly everywhere, especially on the ground, I think the inverted, underground pyramid would wind up being filled with chicle in short order. Or at least seem that way.

Does anyone else see this as similar to the monolithic city Niven wrote about in Oath of Fealty?

It seems crap wouldn't be a problem since the top part would be covered:

It would be like a giant 5th avenue Apple Store

Or..

Perhaps no problems would enter from outside, but it looks like all those terraces and balconies are open to the inside, and that's where I expect the trouble to come from. Someone from level -3 spits his gum straight toward the middle, and it lands on the head of someone on level -12...or in their food, or on their baby, etc...

Hmmm... I'm thinking this is too safe. Can we build in a nuclear reactor?

I like the concept for a lot of reasons. First its pretty resilient to many natural disasters. Earth Quakes being one the few that could affect it assuming its water tight for flooding. To it makes great use of space. Third it can easily power itself and heat itself through geothermal technology. A subway system interconnecting these buildings which each building being a stop would make for great transportation. The impact on the environment would be minimal because of its geothermal ability, walking and electrical transportation reducing air pollution. The buildings could be spread apart enough that the space between them is used for farming. I really like this concept.

I like the concept, but three of the major reasons why buildings haven't been built to that extent underground in the first place: fires, floods, and earthquakes.
