TNG HD Trailer (Blu Ray) 2 - YouTube

Of course, there will be casualties. That poor wood grain looks so bad...

The Enterprise model holds up surprisingly well in HD, but I was kind of hoping they'd take the CG approach from TOS which was masterfully done. I mean, those stupid things look really, really terrible.

Awesome.

I'm also surprised they didn't go TOS route with some of the effects. I mean, they did have superior models, but surely some of the creatures they'll encounter (especially in early seasons) will look pretty terrible in HD.

Did they take the VHS masters and convert to HD (since the show was shot on film but edited on VHS to save money) or did they actually go back to the film and re-edit the entire show in HD?

They went back to the film rolls, then rebuilt all the CGI from scratch. However, they've only done 4 eps worth so far.

Where did you get your info on them going back to the original film rolls?

Where did you get the assumption that VHS can be converted to HD?

VHS can't be converted to HD. And hearing that having to re-cut each episode and then the low wood gain quality, it seemed they might have gone the cheap route VHS > HD up-scaling.

For the record, the original footage is 35 mm, and the editing was done on beta.

I can't wait until its all released. When I got the original movies on Blu-Ray, it was like watching the movies new for the first time all over again.

I hate to necro an old thread, but we've been marathoning TOS on Netflix and will be getting into TNG territory soon.

As much of a giant Trek nerd as I am, I don't own any of them on DVD because they were way too expensive. Has anyone seen one of the full eps in 1080p? Is it going to be worth buying?

The Netflix release of TOS is from the DVDs with the added CGI and stuff. There have been a few episodes where I think the CGI was overdone, but for the most part, it's definitely enhanced rather than detracted from the original show.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.
