Hi.

I just installed OS9.1 on my G4 (Yikes!) and it seems as a lot of things slowed down. Opening quicktime movies takes forever and there is a "sluggish" feel when opening files and folder in the finder.
Is this a common/normal behaviour?
Do i have to "live with it" or is there something i can do about it?

Switch to Mac OS X.

meanwhile, back in the real world...
check appletalk in the chooser; is it on?
it defaulted to "on" when i upgraded to 9.2.1.
when i turned it off, SPEED!

just one possible fix...

Well, i guess i will have to switch to OSX sooner or later, but for now none of my "main" appliactions run under X. Anyway....i just went through all my extension and disabled everything i did`nt find a need for and i also turned off appletalk. Things did get better, but it still does`nt feel up to the speed of 9.0.4 ( not intending to start a discussion about 9.0.4. v 9.1 ). Differences are small now, so i guess it could be me?!

Yes, i know this has helped me gain more speed with previous OS`s. Certainly seems to be case with OS9.1 too....

Oh, sorry tomra, I didn't understand Mac OS 9 had suddenly became slow. I've read so many posts about Mac OS 9 and/or X being slow and sluggish that I supposed I've been brainwashed. Happily, fisherKing brought me back to reality! Anyway, I installed Mac OS 9.2.1, and I can say it is sluggish too... I've also noticed the delay while opening quicktime movies. Personally, I don't think Appletalk can make such everything so sluggish, but then again, maybe that's only in my own little world

Actually i turned appletalk back on to see if the "sluggish" behaviour when opening QT movies appeared again....it did NOT?? Weired stuff going on here. Might have something to do with a freshly installed, but corrupted OSX partion?!

Guess my machine needs a serious cleanup

hmmm.... OS9.1 has been very nice to me (old UMAX S900 clone with 500MHz G3 card, 500 Megs of mem, video capture, USB board, etc...) It is not sluggish here, and has been the most stable OS I have ever used.

But...

I do seem to remeber being underwhelmed when I first fired it up. It turned out that the "problem" was in having the Sherlock 2 Indexing slider (under preferences) set to the default. There would be lot of disk action and some slow response. When I set the "System responsivenes while indexing" slider under the Editreferences menu to "More responsive", and turned off all the automatic indexing options under the Find:Index Volume:Schedule menu, I had no more sluggish response. I occasioanly do a manual index instead.

check that server action too.....

look in the servers folder in the system folder, to see if there are any server addresses in there that the system is automatically trying to connect to......big time slow down

If so, just trash the address and move on

Also try the standard fix of rebuilding your desktop files too.....

Hi, "muttfree".

Checked the servers folder, nothing in there, i`ve also zapped the PRAM and rebuild the desktop. Everything seems pretty much back to normal now.
