...playlists!

BBC News - Ministry of Sound sues Spotify
Dance record label Ministry of Sound is suing music streaming service Spotify, claiming Spotify playlists copy its compilation albums.

Ministry of Sound regularly releases collections of dance hits.

The compilations are not on Spotify, but the label says Spotify infringes copyright because some users' playlists mirror the albums' track listings.

Ministry of Sound said "a lot of research goes into" creating the compilations. Spotify did not comment.

Oh lord.

The recording industry really needs to get its head out of its ass. You would think that they'd have figured out by now that attacking consumers and consumer services isn't going to help sales any.

The Ministry of Sound can kiss my ass, and the asses of the playlists and mixes I've made over the last 30 years.

I put a lot of thought into my posts. I wonder if Webster's will sue everyone for using their words

It's not about the words, its the order you put them in.

I remember putting a lot of thought into mix CDs to give friends as gifts.

Now I just send people links to videos on YouTube.

They shouldn't be copy-writable they're instructions. They all start with the implied, "Play the following songs in this order."

Maybe iPods should come with shuffle turned on, and you have to pay a licensing fee to turn it off per album.

Ridiculous...

What producers/labels need to do is put out their music, for free, on iTunes, unlimited plays and full song (no 60-90 second preview nonsense)...

...and include plugs throughout their songs. (This is what they do with podcasts.)

If you want the in-song ads removed, buy the song, and the ads will be gone.

Suing for posting playlists is no more ridiculous than suing for posting song lyrics.

Why? You'd remove the ads by paying for it, which is the ultimate goal anyway.

As a musician, it would make me queasy if I knew that most people's first listen to my record was laced with commercials. At best, it would be intrusive and destroy the timing and flow of the songs. At worst, it could also result in my work being interspersed with commercials for products that I actively dislike and completely misrepresent me as an individual and artist.

Now, if we're just talking about junk top-40 pop music it might matter less to the artists in question but it's still disgusting to think about for me.

I'm a bit old school, though, in that I still almost exclusively listen to entire albums and would hope that people would be listening to my entire album, too, not just cherry picking songs.

I understand and in many ways share your viewpoints, I just think the horse has long left the barn in terms of listeners actually listening to entire albums from start to finish in their proper order. We are very much single track listeners.
