Sorry if this has been posted before, I tried the search but it wouldn't work.
However I guess it's a pretty quick question.
Is it possible to run 10.3 on an old iMac (350MHz without FW)?
I'm asking this because the computer refuses to boot from the panther CD.
I've heard that OSX should work on all macs with built-in USB. But maybe that was before Panther.
Thankful for all help!

I am too lazy to read that, but ackording to the first paragraph it should work!
Maybe it's something wrong with the cd or cd-reader..

Hmm.. okej..
I managed to boot from the Jaguar CD, but it's dead slow!
If it takes about two-three hours two open up disk utility, load in the harddrive info and write a name for a new partition something mus be wrong, right? could it be that the iMac is lacking in RAM or something? I think it's 64 megs, maybe that's too little. I guess you probably will need about 256 to run OSX smoothly?
But yet, 2-3 hours for doing that?!?!?

64MB isn't enough to run OS X on ANY machine. Panther will work on any machine with USB, enough RAM, and enough hard drive space. You should consider maxing out the RAM on that iMac before you put OS X on it. I don't believe Panther will boot with only 64MB of RAM.

I have a Rev B 233 iMac with 512MB and a 80GB HD and it is dog slow running panther. Maybe a 7200 RPM drive would help, but I doubt it.
It's usable, but barely. Every click means a wait. Surfing is painful.
But it works.

You probably shouldn't be running Panther then.
Just put OS9, unless you have a reason for needing OSX?

We run panther in our lab on all the computers. That includes an original 233 iMac and a 350 slot loader (without FW). You have to realize that you are using a computer that is 7 years old but it works. And Panther on that machine is still better than OS9.

Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

I'm posting this to defy those who are running the same system with Panther and say it is great. It's not great. It sucks.
I'm using panther for iTunes. I probably could run Jaguar or even 10.1, but I gotta have iTunes with Airtunes support. However, Panther is supposed to be snappier(TM) than all previous OSXs.
It's my garage computer anyway. It's performance doesn't have to be great (It isn't), but it just needs to work enough. It works enough.
