That's... OK I like it... but does that actually work like that or was he having someone plug in and unplug the ADC cable?

I believe it actually worked that way. the Cube had the same sort of touch sensor on it as well, which caused issues if you were putting a CD in because often you'd activate the button without knowing it.
Those were cool products.

The screen and the Cube use a capacitive switch, which detects some changes in its field when you touch it, because the body also exhibits capacitance. Some models of touch-screen work that way too. That's why it doesn't work when he uses plastic or rubber objects: it must be conductive.

New Cinema displays have the same sort of functionality as in you can wake your machine from sleep by pressing the power button on the screen

I'll admit, pre-10.3 and 10.4 OS X was ridiculously slow at shutting down and starting up, but on more recent systems the speed is just fine.

Those were cool products.
the button on the cube is on the opposite side of the cd slot. i've never had issues inserting or removing a cd. i've wiped dust off with my hand and had it start up, but that's about it.
