Why does iTunes only play the songs that are checked? I want to listen to a cd thru, but not have to check every song because my iPod cant hold all the songs but I still want to listen to them on my computer without having to click on each song.

BEcuase unchecking the song tells iTunes never to play it. If you want to hear it you have to turn it back on, or put it in a playlist where it is checked on.

That's the whole point of the checkboxes. If you need to be unchecking things in order to fit your music onto your iPod, then it sounds like you really should be setting the iPod to manual sync, or autosync with playlists only. Why don't you just make an "iPod" playlist with all the songs you want on your iPod, and then autosync that? That's essentially what I do.

Even better, create a smart playlist of songs that you haven't listened to recently. Every time you connect your iPod to your Mac, the playlist will update itself, and you'll get a fresh batch of songs. You can restrict the smart playlist to a certain size or number of songs, so you can leave room on the iPod for other playlists.

Excellent question !!
The most common cause is that your computer has been plugged in to a power outlet. Check nearby outlets to make sure it's not. If that doesn't work, you may need to manually reach around behind your computer and pull out the power supply. This will fix it 99% of the time (unless you have a laptop ... whole different can of worms there).
If this doesn't work for you, you can try a couple other things:
- Turn of the main power to your house
- Install Window ME (this will work if you give it a little time)
-Since your computer is on anyway, you may want to email AppleCare (you did purchase AppleCare, right ? ) and proceed from there.
Best of luck, post some pics if you can't get it to stop working and maybe someone else on the forums can help.

Thanks for the suggestions Krusty, I tried turning off the main power to my house but then the lights went off strangely, and I need lights or I get nervous so that won't work.
I have taken pictures of the machine maybe someone here can help me with this dilemma.
the power is clearly on
and the power cord is clearly plugged in...

"Prior to iTunes 4 you could have songs checked in a playlist and not checked in the library. This meant you could uncheck things in the library to make it the right size to go on the iPod but still play tracks by using a catch all playlist with the songs checked. This functionality has vanished with no explanation. I miss it as I now keep finding stuff is not on my iPod that I want because I have to keep playing with checking songs.
I've provided feedback to Apple - why not do the same?"
Not such a dumb question after all?
