Grrrrrr. Why can't any of the alternatives to IE consistently work right on OSX? Safari - love it, but I can't bid on eBay, have to access my eBay with a secure sign-in, lots of forms on other pages don't work. Firefox - super browser, very fast, downloads are pretty sketchy (I get a pop-up window with cancel as my only option form many downloads), can't bid on eBay, can't sent several webpages with forms, hotmail doesn't work. Camino - no hotmail, ebay, etc. Mozilla - pretty good, but tooooo slow. Grrrrrrr. Anyone have any workarounds, fixes for any of this stuff?

you can not bid on ebay with safari?

i bid on ebay.com all the time. a friend in london using safari bids on ebay.co.uk all the time.

have you tried to delete the safari .plist. that is a bit bizarre that you can not do those things you mentioned, all of them work fine for me.

i only use safari, my bank, everything is working for me.

eBay let's me bid with Safari on my machine, AFAIK. Which version are you on?
As an alternative, you could use Sherlock for eBay.

Safari v1.2

When I bid, I am asked for my password (even if I am already logged in) and I get the always annoying:

Safari cant open the page http://signin.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll.

The error was: bad server response (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011)

This is the same error that I get when I go to the regular "my ebay" login. If I use SSL, I can login.

Works fine here too, make SURE you report it to Apple.

Are you using the Safari Debug Menu to change your browser type? Sounds like a network problem to me.

Yeah, I think you have some network issues. Those problems aren't normal. Opera is another alternative, but it is more prone to the types of problems you describe than Firefox or Safari (forms not sending, missing buttons, page layouts screwed up). YOu could always go text-based and get Links if you want speed without prettiness.

Whatz that?

Speaking of network issues - I didn't say that I'm running a satellite system, connecting to the sat modem via ICS on a WinXP home system. I've got issues.

It was impossible to upload images to ebay.de with Safari 1.0. Didn't try since.

odd i've never had any form problems on ebay or otherwise with Safari or Firefox, do you have javascript enabled? some forms require it if they do client-side validation.

I have a quick question about security. I've just recently switched from Windows, and was wondering what the best/most secure browser is for buying stuff online from Amazon and eBay? In Windows I used FireFox as I didn't trust IE (and it would crash when trying to pay my bills online!).

I currently have IE 5.2 and Safari 1.2 on my new iBook. Which do you recommend I use?

thanks.

Thanks, I didn't realise it was available for Mac.

Is IE for mac as dodgy as it is under Windows?

Completely different code bases. Basically the similarities end at the name. But IE has not been updated in AGES and with Apple bringing out Safari MS called four and took their toys home. So unless you are a member of MSN internet service you will never see a updated IE.

It's a hidden menu you can enable via software like "cocktail"

Could you connect your mac with another method (even modem would be ok)
Just to test with another connection

Maybe your XP box doesn't give you a "good" secure connection

There's plenty of browsers for OS X:

Mozilla
Netscape
IE
Omniweb
Safari
Camino
Firefox
iCab
Opera

And I'm sure there's more...

And yes, IE under OS X is the worst piece of software that I have ever used. I deleted it loooooong time ago. I also deleted iCab and Opera loooong time ago too. Neither browser lasted more than five minutes on my Powerbook. I use Mozilla, Safari, Firefox, and Omniweb.

The new Opera rocks. iCab is nice, but needs CSS support pronto.

It's up to you. I don't even have IE installed on my Powerbook. The only M$ Products I have installed are Windows Media Player (because some sites still insist on using this) and M$ Office.

I hope someone has mentioned, just for the new people in this thread, that you NEED to install ie on your os x box at the get go, because that's how you get MS fonts, which are used all over the web. You can then delete it, but you should always install it.

I'd do the same except the enrolment process at my university doesn't work on anything But IE, the good people at PeopleSoft really know how to code.

If you need the embedded plugin functionality then you're stuck with WMP, but if you're talking about downloadable files then I suggest VLC or MPlayer instead. Both play Windows Media just fine.

One huge gripe I had with WMP, on the two occasions I used it before biffing it, is that any file that was opened with it suddenly became assigned to WMP, by this I mean the default player was changed - without asking - to WMP. That really pissed me off, it's such a MS thing to do. The only reason I installed it was because a News site started using it instead of Real, however, they since introduced Flash videos, so the WMP plugin is in the trash too.

I would recommend firefox -it's free, fast, cross platform, updated regulary, renders pages well, has tabbed browsing, the ability to block images by server..... Try it out at mozilla.org
