He is one of my favorite artists. Recently saw him live at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis.

Life On Mars?

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on Amerika's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
The arrangement on this song is just incredible.

Just thinking of the lead-in to the chorus gives me goosebumps.

I could post about ten or fifteen Bowie songs, including most of "Hunky Dory", all of which would be my favorite, depending on the day.

This thread made me want to shuffle through all my Bowie songs. How am I supposed to choose? Right now I'm listening I Pray Ol, and the last two songs were Moonage Daydream and Boys Keeps Swinging.

Three good ones, anyway.

I will admit that I have heard of the name David Bowie, but couldn't name one of his songs.

You probably know a couple of his songs, without knowing they're his.

"Ch-ch-ch-ch-CHAN-GES" is one you cannot have missed. It was used on a number of commercials, including (i believe) Swatch.

"Under Pressure" (with Queen) is most likely familiar.

"China Girl" has a hookline that you're sure to know.

So does "Ashes to Ashes".

(Reminds me of when I first heard an Elton John Greatest Hits compilation: I knew every. single. song. but only associated about four with the name.)

It's so hard to choose...

Scary Monsters and Super Creeps - just can't get tired of that one, and it's not over played anyhow

Think I'll cue it up in iTunes while I try to win an iPod.

Bus Stop, from the Tin Machine years.
There's a cry that is heard in the city
From Vivian at Pentecost Lane
A shriekin' and dancing till 4 a.m.
Another night of muscles and pain
I love you despite your convictions
That God never laughs at my jokes

I'm a young man at odds with the Bible
But I don't pretend faith never works
When we're down on our knees
Prayin' at the bus stop

Now Jesus he came in a vision
And offered you redemption from sin
I'm not sayin' that I don't believe you
But are you sure that it really was him
I've been told that it couldn've been blue cheese
Or the meal that we ate down the road

I'm a young man at odds with the Bible
But I don't pretend faith never works
When we're down on our knees
Prayin' at the bus stop

Another one not mentioned:

Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side". (Okay, written by Reed, but co-produced, co-arranged, and co-mixed by Bowie, who also did a bunch of backing vox on the rest of "Transformer")

My favorite David Bowie song was the cover of Walk This Way that he did with Public Enemy because it was the first rap metal song.

My wife's is "Is there life on Mars"?

We listen to a lot bowie around here. its hard to say what our favorite song is.

ThisGuy: I just listened to Outside today very loud for the first time in a while. I loved it. Heart's Filthy Lesson is one of his best.

Possibly "Secret Life Of Arabia", although most of the Eno/Bowie songs really turn my crank in the right direction.

No, he didn't. I was mocking John F. Smith's post where he wrote that Alexander Hamilton was his favorite President because he got the country through tough times.

There were a few jokes in my post. Run-DMC's cover of Walk This Way (with Aerosmith) is often credited as the first rap metal song. Anthrax's cover of Bring the Noise (with Public Enemy) is also often credited as the first rap metal song.

Neither one was. That credit goes to Anthrax's - it was supposed to be Anthrax and the then punk band Beastie Boys but the guys in Anthrax took all the lines for themselves - I'm the Man.

In other words, I put a few pieces of rap metal minutiae together and replaced a punk band with a different punk star.

It was funny to me...

Oh, and for interested parties:
Bowie recovers from heart surgery

Music legend David Bowie is recovering at home in New York after undergoing emergency heart surgery.

Bowie, 57, underwent surgery last month in Germany - where he was on tour - to treat "an acutely blocked artery", his spokesman said.

He left hospital earlier this week and is convalescing at home in New York, the spokesman added.

The star's cancellation last month of 11 European dates was originally attributed to a shoulder injury.

The spokesman said Bowie sought treatment for what was thought to a be a pinched nerve in his shoulder after performing at a festival in the north-western German town of Scheessel. [Continues...]
