Star Trek's best villain dies at 88

Ricardo Montalban was my fave baddie in Star Trek, and I liked Fantasy Island as a kid too. He'll be missed.

Man. I remember seeing Star Trek II for the first time, and I thought it was AWESOME - great special effects and all. Then I bought it on DVD a few years ago and re-watched it, and was like...uh...that's it?

Movies as a kid always seem better than when you're grown up.

Every time I see a Chrysler Cordoba I always think of its rich Corinthian leather.

We are lessened. Mr. Montalban was quite a gentleman, quite an actor, and quite a human being. He hurt his back filming a western in the 1940s and was in constant pain ever after. He worked, and worked very hard, in spite of the pain, and never sank to the "oh poor me" level so many "celebrities" have made their homes.

Gracias, señor, para todo. Nos extrañar.

Damn, that's too bad. He definitley was the best villian in Star Trek. Revenge is a dish best served cold. It is very cold in space.

Star Trek II was awful 80s mash of 60s TV episodes and looked like it only had 1/20th of the budget of the quite wonderful Star Trek the Motion Picture.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

If you only got to see it on a local TV station that cut it to bits in order to shove in as many commercials as possible, you might think that. It was, at its release, a fantastic film, with effects that I could only call "cutting edge." It was THE first use of 3D computer animation for a major effects sequence (the "Genesis probe simulation"), it included state of the art photographic effects, and it was a GREAT Star Trek episode. Yes, it was an episode, but a long one with a huge budget. The best Star Trek films have all been like extended episodes, because they went to character driven stories rather than "ooohh, ahhhhh" sorts of effects spectacles (i.e. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture").

I, for one, am amused that the last piece of TV work Montalban did (as far as I know) involved a Holocaust joke.

Also, The Motion PIcture was nothing but a TV pilot intolerably drawn out to movie length.

Which Star Trek movie was it again where Khan was defeated, because `space had 3 dimensions and not 2'?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I remember Fantasy Island and a few of his older films, and of course the old Chrysler commercials.

RIP Ricardo

Star Trek II is still one of my favorite movies. Mr. Montalban, you will be missed.

And for those of you that haven't seen it: http://www.khaaan.com/

Just how long do most people hold down the 'a' key for, anyway? It drops off at 13 ("KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!") but picks up a little at 40 ("KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!) .

Yeah I've tried watching several great movies from the 80's recently and they are all terrible. Just dreadful. Hard to believe how much better movies are now. I think almost any mediocre POS movie from today would be heralded as the dawn of a great new age of filmmaking if it had come out 25 years ago. Only Bladerunner seems to have held up.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.
