The latest and greatest

MacBook Pro is built on the revolutionary Intel Core 2 Duo — which packs the power of two processor cores (up to 2.4GHz) inside a single chip. It provides 4MB of Smart Cache, L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. It delivers higher performance in 2D and 3D graphics, video editing, and music encoding. But the faster engine is only part of the story. MacBook Pro delivers up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory with a faster, 800MHz frontside bus and support for hard drives up to 250GB. Ultimate speed, performance, and connectivity. To go. That’s MacBook Pro.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Graphically speaking

Whether you’re creating 3D animation, editing photos from the day’s shoot, or playing your favorite video game, MacBook Pro delivers serious processing power with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics controller.
Display’s the thing

A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display.

I've been waiting for a 12" PB replacement with dedicated graphics, since I like the smaller form factor, but still want to play Civ IV. Is it ever going to happen?

Should I just pick up a refurb MBP 15" instead?

moving from a 12" 1.5g g4; been waiting for a 12" mbp, waiting waiting waiting...
but may go for this, after all.
smaller mbp seems unlikely (or at least until "late 2007-early 2008" rumored subnotebook).

nice specs, tho...

Im not surprised by this update. But with the SantaRosa so close to being put into a machine i can only imagine the how those would feel after buying this update and then having the much newer platform come out so soon.

I havent personally seen a review the new video card though. anyone know what its like?

17" not have LED. Looks like the LCD for the 15" is LED for both matte and glossy. interesting.

Its an update nontheless

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/09/n...-get-official/

Here ya go guys. Its a link that tells you briefly what the new video card is about. Basically it is claimed that it is the only gfx card to supprt DirectX10 in a mobile platform (in windows world - but i guess that bodes well for mac too ?) . And has 2x performance of previous gpu. Accelerated decoding of H.264 full HD movies.

Sounds good to me. It something to sweeten the pot to make someone who has been waiting for a while to put out some money for it.

I wont be buyng it until santa rosa though regardless of this

You're not going to get one. With the MB specs being so close to the MBP there's little chance (read zero) that Apple will release a 13" MacBook Pro.

Still no Blu-ray. Have to wait until that or quad core in a year. I'm not buying a notebook and then feeling glum because I can't play HD movies on it.

Everyone I have spoken to who wants a new laptop doesnt want large screens. They want power in a small laptop to carry around to LAn places and hook em upto LCD's that are over 24" and cheap to buy.

Even my macshop in melbourne said that they alwasy get asked for a "13 with a decent gfx card.

Apple.........Clearly out of touch with todays trends.

Also note-

"17 is not LED

Ado i agree with you.

It has been too long with no 12 or 13" pro line. I guess they have their market research ppl telling a different story.

Rumors of a smaller mbp are floating around though. Im guessing that something will be revealed with the new santa rosa platform.

When I choose glossy the price drops $50, which is unusual.

3 biggest peeves-

1) MB rubbish gfx for 3D

2) MBP cases are 6 years old and done to death. Even pc laptops have immited and moved on....
.....uninspiring apple.

3) No "12/13 MBP...For that earth conscious gamer/3d pro.

Apple makes products for shareholders.

For those who live in the Dominion of Canada...

The stronger the loonie goes (supposed to be at par with USD by the end of summer... allegedly)... buying a Apple products in the US can net a bunch of savings.

..say $200 on the base 15" model.

...allegedly.

Ahhhh!!!! I have no money right now... Curse you summer vacation trip to Fiji.... why must you get in the way of my new Macintosh buying....

But the question is... is it worth it to buy the mid-range model... the bigger hard drive... better graphics card....

Oh the insanity! Now I need to save up between 233,000 and 300,000¥ Grrr...... There goes a month's paycheck. An entire paycheck.

I feel the same way. The yen is really weak right now, and I'd be paying an extra $120 because of the difference.

Still farking around with low-res panels on the 15". C'mon guys, Sony/Dell had 15" HD (1920x1200) laptops four years ago.
Also no eSATA, or high def optical, or HDMI, or flash memory, or WWAN... and the list goes on.
And no option for 1x2GB, so you're faced with paying Apple's extortionary (triple retail) prices for 2x2GB, or tossing the 2x1GB.

Or much more. Apple says it is 57% faster than the Radeon X1600. A fully clocked 8600 GT is 75% faster than the Geforce 8200 which is in turn faster than a X1600. The numbers don't add up. Either Apple underclocked it a lot or their benching app sucks.

The good news is that Windows has apps to change the clockspeed and save it to ROM.

So make your fonts bigger; text will still look better, and you'll be able to see photos/movies at or at least closer to their native resolution.

When I choose glossy on the 2.4 GHz 15" (Canadian Education pricing), the price goes down from $2599.00 to $2432.00.

$167 more for matte?!

Also, when I choose the 7200RPM 160 GB drive, the shipping time goes from 1-3 days up to 4-6 weeks!

Ah, and on the 17", the 1920x1200 glossy is CHEAPER than the 1680x1050 matte by $56, but only with the default drive selected.

Weird, this must be a mistake.

If I change the resolution everyhting is fuzzy, i.e., not the native resolution. Trying to make other text larger doesn't work.

I find the resolution of the 15" MBP to be right in the sweet spot. If you need a higher resolution then perhaps the 17" model is a better fit for you.

They've got the new 800Mhz FSB CPUs and the Crestline chipset, but they may still be using a non-Intel wifi chip which would make the MBP not "Santa Rosa."

No, the new CPUs are still 65nm; 45nm (Penryn and friends) won't be out until the end of the year or early next year.

That's not what I said. I didn't say change your screen resolution. I said increase your font sizes (or zoom in apps like Word). Or just buy the low res option.

The 17" is a whale. 7 pounds is almost double the weight I'd like, and a pound and a half more than I'm willing to accept.
