theres a lot of talk about the 2 FM transmitters for the ipod (how do they work by the way?), but i haven't heard anything about an AM transmitter. I'm a talk-show junkie and while i love FM stations, i'm more interested in AM radio. are there any cool looking peripherals for the ipod in this regard?

transmitters send signals to a radio.
receivers get signal.
Sounds like you want an AM Radio for your iPod, but they don't make such a thing (a shame).
I believe an FM Tuner was just released, but don't know the link off the top of my head.

Sorry to hijack the thread so I'll say that I wish there were an AM tuner too.
The FM receiver is the iFM from griffin technology.
I wish there were one designed (ideally with AM) like the iTrip looking like a seemless add-on to the iPod.

Although I'm in the 20's but I like news and sport on AM radio. Unfortunately I think there isn't any AM radio accessories for iPod is due to technological reasons (believe it or not!)
For manufacturers to make FM radio accesories, there are plenty of PLL (Phase Lock Loop) based FM transmitter and receiver chip available (you can even get a single chip FM receiver from Radio Shack or other electronics store if you are an electronicss hobblist), and you can get very good quality out of the single chip.
For AM, there's still chips available to do similar things, but due to the nature how AM works, they tend to pick up more interference (especially when the receiver is near any other electronic devices), making the quality of output less than desirable. Now, I don't think manafacturers would be prepared to make dual AM/FM (or AM alone for the matter) iPod accessories if the FM quality is good, but AM quality is shocking, right?

Yep, another fellow talk radio (not *hate* radio) junky here and basically I have resorted to bringing around a small am reciever around with me. There is no shortage of microscopic FM radios, but once AM gets involved the things just get bigger. I had found one very small / slim / light am/fm receiver, but lost it, and I can't find another one that is even close to the same size anymore.
Oh well..
